I was out flying today and thought I would try out my new Super Nova 250-S. Neat toy.
One question? How the heck do you get 17.59 V @ 2.50 A out of a 12 V battery

And yes I know the cables appear to be reversed, actually that cable is a backup that plugs directly into the pack in case my "Benford" gets too low......I guess that can't happen now with the Super Nova!

everything until now has been wrong

I think we all have been mis-informed. It never has been 12volts DC

By using a DC-DC boost (step-up) power supply design.

Heli_Gal,

yes it's a nice charger. It will fast charge / slow charge / cycle any pack, NiCad or NiMh (peak detect) from 1 to 25 cells. And up to 5Amps.
It also charge 12v field battery.

It usually goes for about $130.00

If you're interested, The RC Battery Clinic has a comprehensive review.

How do they do it.

It is what we in the electronics trade call a switching power supply. The DC from the battery is actually converted to a high frequency AC of sorts and then it puts out a regulated DC output. Just like the screen of your colour TV, typically a lot of colour TV sets have over 45,000 volts in the picture tube and all that from 120VAC. Or else you can think of it as black magic if you like.

Your probaly hooking it up to a 17.59 V source.

Are you driving a Diesel truck or car with a weak 24 V system or some new Hybrid with 18 V system.

BTW.......I LOVE MY SUPER NOVA 250S

jmiceli11, I'm charging my "Benford" pack.....12 cell 14.2V.
tisrich, that's a clip that comes with the "Kwik-Start" glo heater. I figured I would just screw it on the side and have it all right there!...hehe...works pretty good.

That's a nice charger, A friend has had one for a while now and he likes it real well. I plan on getting a Logo 10 before long and will probably go with a Super Nova also.

18v from 12v

There is an internal cct that chops the dc, passes it thru a stepup transformer, then rectifies and filters, and voila, higher voltage. This is one way to do it, there are others also.

You can step up the volage but generally as you pump up the votage the current drive capabilites drop. There is no free power. If you are drawing 10 amps at the input the input power is 120watts. At the output the max current at 18 v would be 6.67amps.

I REALLY liked the way mine (Dymond - same charger, different label) charged small NiMH flight packs for my micro helis. However for larger packs like 24 cells it cannot keep up with the charge rate of the likes of the Orbit and Schulze chargers. I let the smoke out of mine by hooking up a previously charged 24 cell pack to top it up

Cheers!

Cheers!
