| Consider Rhino3D and Solidworks as well. Both excellent programs. Solidworks is THE standard in engineering analysis in relation to solids. Rhino is an excellent free-form solid modeler using NURBS. I would reccomend either of those over AutoCAD if you want to get into CAM work.
Rhino's big advantage is that it is geared towards making shapes that aren't definable with common basic shapes. How do you model a shoe for example...
In helicopter world most of the parts are readily designable in almost any CAD package, so fear not. Any program that will output an IGES, STL, or DWG is probably good enough.
