I mentioned this once before on a topic but will do it again.... get an old smoke alarm, take it apart and retrieve the radioactive gold spot out of it. as long as you don't swallow it or hold it in your hand for like 4 hrs. it will not hurt you. go to an army surplus store that sells geiger counters for radiation detection,to make sure it detects the little disc that you take in with you, then buy the geiger counter and install the smoke alarm disc in your heli.it can be glued in and no one has to know about it! i had a guitar stolen but it was returned 'cause somebody in the bar was present when i showed the owner my setup and i was happy to get my bass back! not really that dangerous but it works!! all my heli's and my band equip are marked like that. ken

I would like to be sitting in my car across the street from your place when the Fed's show up at you place. I can see it in the newspapers now .
Local Indy man questioned about stash of radioactive material detected during satelite flyover. Several R/C helicopters and musical insturments confiscated in the raid, man claims that he is just a music lover and flies the helicopters for stress relief. Neighbors where shocked as they said " he was just a normal guy that all the neighborhood kids just loved. What a shock to have this going on next door "
Man is also facing animal cruelity charges as several hampsters where found in the house. Police suspect the man was flying the hampters around in the helicopters and that the hampsters must have been kept near the radioactive material as all but one of the animals had large tumors on there butts.

Well since I'm so safety minded I'm going to immediately remove and dispose of all of my smoke detectors!!!

Do I have to take them to a HAZMAT place?

Glenn.

Cormac> no it doesn't interfere with rf and it works! even if you just show up with a gieger counter in your hand it freaks em out wether it's r/a or not! ken

george i'm sorry you are just misinformed about radio active materials, remember all the glo in the dark chemicals are radio active! ken

btw i'm fine and i could care less if the feds did show up i bought the smoke alarms legally from home depot so let them go get them!!!!

I just use my labelmaker, and stick it between the tailboom on the horizontal stabilizer bracket. Hidden and easy to get too with just two screws.

OK i guess i'll go away now, i was only trying to make a suggestion and no! americium 235 can't be detected by satellite, but just showing up with a geiger counter really psyches people out, been there, done that. and another thing it can't be used for nuclear warheads or such! just trying to be helpfull.

have a good life! ken

You do need to lighten up! The folks here are just having a little fun, that's all!

It actually sounds very innovative. I had no idea about any of that.

What kind of range does this have? 1 foot? 10 feet? 1 mile?

Glenn > oh about a foot away is good. really just showing up with the counter in your hand makes people think! thats how i got my guitar back! there really wasn't anything radioactive in any of it. but i do it now and no probs with me yet, yet, yet, yet just kidding! it's mainly a psyche thing that most people don't realize and once you mention radioactive! good lord half the time the thieves bring stuff you never owned to you! try showing up at your local pawn shop with one you will have some fun! ken

Hi Jay

Damn, I can't believe I'm about to say this (better tell my wife to order me a pocket protector).... The half-life of Am-241 (the Americium used in smoke detectors) is 430 years. God help me, I am a geek!

And with a patriotic name like that, why wouldn't you use it? Some people are over-reactive to stuff marked radioactive so it's easy(and fun) to freak them out.

I remember picking up an old laser system that had 4 krytrons in it, each one had a little radioactive logo emblazoned on it. Sold them on eBay (yes to a US citizen), but got questioned by eBay about selling radioactive materials and had to mark the package radioactive, which was fun at the post office, but done according to their rules.
