Any of you electric heli guys using the Schulze 636? If so, and you are comfortable with it in terms of set-up, powering it, etc. would you please PM me with your phone number and a good time to reach you. I need to discuss a couple of questions.

Many thanks!

Ford:

I use one, no problems.

I will be out most of the day today, but if you want to post your questions, I'll try to get on-line and answer them ASAP.

I found it easier to use than the Triton and harder than the Sirius.

Hi Ford, what specifically are you looking for?

I find the 636 much easier to use than the SuperNova I had a while back and probably as easy to use as the Alpha 4.

I am powering my 636 with an Astron SS-30M switching power supply. It's rated at 25A continuous and 30A ICS. I wouldn't even consider using a PC power supply. The SS-30M is probably a little on the small side, but it's the largest switcher Astron currently makes and I'm not charging the max number of cells at the max current. Also, the SS-30M has both voltage and amp meters on the front. With what I'm charging I've never drawn over 9A from the power supply.

If you want to know more PM me and send me you phone number and timezone. I'll be leaving for Toledo on Thursday. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions as best I can.

That is pretty low amperage, I'd watch it carefully! How many cells are you charging?

I'm running mine off a Pyramid PS52KX and often see by the meters that it is drawing over 35 amps from the wall while charging a pack of 32 3300mAh NiMh cells in automatic mode!!

Hi Greg, I'm only charging 8 cell packs. I've never pulled more than 9A from the power supply so I'm fine for now. If I get into the really big packs I'll get a 50A+ supply. I just wish Astron made a 50A switcher. If not, I'll have to break down and get an ICT power supply which will run almost as much as the 636!

Ace Dude:

The Astron units look really nice, but you don't need a high-end power supply for charging. You might want to look into the Pyramid line, I now have three of them in different sizes and they all work flawlessly! And the price was right!

Also, if you slightly increase the voltage of the power supply (say, to 15V) you will see that the amperage goes down a bit.

A quick search shows it here for $158:

You're right, I'd hate to pay more for the power supply than the charger!

I just bought a Schulze 636 to charge my 32 cell pack. My current power supply puts out 12v at 10 amps. I plan to get a better power supply for this charger sometime soon. In the meantime, if I charge the 32 cell pack with this charger and power supply, should I expect the power supply to get pretty hot? The power supply does have a built in fan. Will this combo work?

Also, does anybody know much about the Rivergate 45 amp DC Bulldog power supply at Tower Hobbies?

Thanks,
SailMike

SailMike:

I have three words for you: Don't do it!

Using something rated at 10 amps to do 30+ amps of work will, if you are lucky, just destroy the power supply, if you aren't, it will explode and burn the house down!

I haven't heard of the Rivergate, but I took a quick look at the specs and it looks fine. At $219 it is about $50 more than the Pyramid PS52KS that I have and doesn't have the cool meters the Pyramid does, but it is much better than the one you have!

Take a look at the MFJ. It's less expensive and has meters:

I like that one - especially the size! But it is $41.61 more expensive than the Pyramid, not less!

Pyramid: $158.34

MFJ: $199.95

I was comparing the price to the Rivergate that Tower is selling, not the Pyramid.
