Computer Flight Simulators > G2 and DSL

Ok, all you computer goobers out there, I have a question for you.My G2 was running perfectly on my computer untill I installed DSL. Now a stutter has developed in the graphics at about once per 1/2 to 3/4 second. And as this happens the hard drive is being asccessed. Before this started a complete flight could be made without any problems or hard drive access. Anything come to mind as to what could have been installed wrong to cause this problem?

Thanks for pondering my problem! Scott

Well maybe you can change the buffering settings on your CD (or better yet why is your CD being accessed?

My first question is how much RAM do you have? The only reason it would be accessing the HDD (hard disk drive) is the RAM is being used up and is dumping information into Virtual Memory. My second question is do you have G2 updated to the latest version? My third question is what happens if you disconnect/unplug your cable from the computer? Does it still stutter? One other thing you might try is to defrag your HDD. It might speed things up a bit.

Try unloading the DSL drivers from the system tray (lower right corner) and see if that is actually the problem, or just a coincidence.

Thanks Doug, but it's the hard drive thats being accessed, the cd only runs when the program first starts like normal.

Slider, I have 256k of memory, and have had the virtural memory set both at auto and at a lower manual setting per hercules web site. Both do nothing to help. My guess is just what you're getting at. Somthing happened at dsl install to kill my ram but I don't know what it might be. My g2 is updated through the 3d add-on disc.Everything started to work great at this piont so I did not upgrade any more. Then this dsl thing happened. The first thing I tried was a defrag, but it didn't help. I will try unhooking the cable (phone line) and see if this helps. Thanks alot guys for your help!

The DSL is it a internal modem, or external modem with a network card interface. The external w/nic should cause no problems but the internals are very problematic.

Snetrich, Yes my ethernet card is internal. Its a d-link 10/100 base card running the included drivers off cd. I am getting the feeling that I need to remove the card and/or drivers and see if the problem goes away. And if so then figure out a fix. As you say, an external maybe what I need to go to. thanks for the info.

Hi Scott,

first question, what OS are you running ? 98, Me, Win2000, XP ?
If Win2000 or XP, try to simply disable the network connection. This shouldn't require a reboot.
The DSL by itself shouldn't affect your computer performance, but it loads some extra code into memory (TCP/IP stack, PPPoE in some cases).

Are you running any application in the background (like P2P soft, Morpheus, DirectConnect or anything like that) That may consume some memory and CPU cycles as well. Try to unload from memory any unnecessary software. That goes for anti virus too. (just disable it prior to starting G2, reactivate when your done).
Also unload any Instant Messaging software, like Yahoo Messenger, AOL or MSN. You can kill Real Player and all this crap too.

If you have a printer that loads a monitoring agent, you can also diable it.

Basically, your systray (small icons in the bottom right corner where the clock is) should be kept as clean as possible.
Hope this helps,

Remy

Thanks Remy!

I just realized this morning that I hadn't tried to shut down any background apps. Never had to before, so I didn't think of it. I will try that tonight and see if it helps. If not I will try your sugestions. By the way I am running 98. Thanks again for your time..

Hay guys!

Thanks for all the help. I have it fixed now. Working like a champ again. Once I got my head out of my butt and shut off "netwaiting" in the systray, It started working just fine. Again, thanks to all for showing me the lighted way!!!
