Main Discussion > Realflight G2, Is anybody else having problems getting it to fly like a real model

Hi,

Just wondering if anybody else is expierencing problems with g2 like me.

Getting the sim custom models (or even there default models) to fly anything remotely close to a model helicopter. The trainer 30 is about the best flying model of the bunch for me, but I can't get any cyclic rate out of it.

None of these problems showed up for me untill knife edge released the "new" flight physics, but unfortunely the older version wont run anymore (white screen with no 3d graphics). I've tried beta versions with no improvement.

Some of my problems are Heading Hold not Holding even through basic maunevers such as a tail first loop, stationary flips, etc. Tail breaking loose anytime you put some collective in.

No matter what I try parameter wise (blades, paddles, motor, etc) I can not get stationary flips without the motor loading down and letting the tail break loose. Cyclic rate is slow even with 45 degrees of paddle tilt and 20gram paddles, about 1/2 flip per second.

Severe pitch up or down on hi-speed forward or backward flight (uprite or inverted), self destructing helicopter in mid air for no obvious reason.

Ground effect is backwards in the sim, my real 30 does aerobatic autos better than the 60's in g2.

I do have one good thing too say, the 60 I have setup is hovering well

The transmitter interface driver for Win2k fails all the time which requires a re-install, upgrade, update, etc plus running g2 under win2k locks up all the time, but on win98 the trainsmitter interface glitches like crazy so thats out of the question, wont work on win me (nothing else does either), win xp has the same problems as win 2k.

3 different reliable computers, same problems. Yet all 3 systems will go through a long session (8hrs) of multiplayer gaming (q3a, unreal, etc) without a hitch or 60 hr work week's of software development.

Dont get me wrong I dont expect perfection and I adjust quickly to different models (in real life) but g2 is doing some really stupid things real models do not. As much as I like sims and they have saved me $$$ in the past as it is rite now g2 is useless.

Just wanted to see if anyone else is having the same expierence as me with the newer versions.

Getting off the soap box!

G2

Never had a problem with G2 in 98se, ME, 2000 or XP.. My helis are actually VERY twitchy as I have the paddles real light to make it very sensitive.. I have the transmitter interface and the only time I had problems with it was installing the SP2 on windows 2000 and after that is was just plain broke. Since upgrading to XP.. no problems at all, ever! Even though I don't have problems I am still checking and testing the beta stuff out. Dunno what params you are working with but I can make my helis super sluggo or lightning fast... change the paddles.. also check to see were your Gyro sensitivty is linked to on the radio and make sure that it is set properly.. open up the views and add gyro sensitivity, so that you can see what the sensitivty of it is.. I can almost guarantee that it is 20% or less...
I won't stick up for Knifedge as they always reply that they only Designed RF and G2 for windows 9x... but that is their stock excuse to get out of it..

Following is my config for comparisson...
Gigabyte MB
Athlon XP 1800+
1 gigabyte PC133 ram
120 Gig WD HD
Toshiba DVD
Yamaha CDRW
Hercules Prophet 4500 - Kyro II chipset

And my 9z transmitter hooked to the interface..

The pitch-down at speed was one of my biggest complaints with RFD. That, and the increased cyclic authority RFD gives you when you build up some airspeed. The setup I'm using now almost cures those entirely, it's online at http://www.whatever.net/~futura - follow the Guillaume Hastoy link at the bottom of the list.

I haven't had trouble with roll rates, but then again I don't fly my real heli with a fast roll rate anymore so I probably haven't found the simulator's limit. I'm only using 40% of the available engine power though, I thought it was way overpowered in stock form.

I've noticed the tail blowing out now and then, but I have only just begun to try to fix that. I'm trying by increasing the tail rotor diameter, I might change the tail rotor gear ratio next. If you have any luck fixing this, let us know. With the heli setup I mentioned above, it only breaks loose in pretty demanding stuff, like fast backward with the engine lugged down.

I agree that aerobatic autos are a bit weird, it seems like the rotor slows too easily, but I think the final seconds at the end of the auto are now pretty close.

I've had good results under Win2k, even with the transmitter interface. There's been one or two times I had to reboot, I think hibernation might be messing up the driver, but other than that it works well for me.

My system, just for the sake of completeness:

AMD 1.4Ghz
512mb ram
GeForce 3 / 64mb
cheep sound card
Windows 2000
Futaba 8U

Hi,

Guess its just my stuff I am running w2k sp 2 and the interface just quits working after so many power offs. I did have some of the problems on w2k and no service pack.

Freestyle,

I tried the f1 carbon, not bad but its trully a 30 size (based on the sim 30, dont really care if it flies well) that flies like a 60 and autos like a 30.

The tail held well for me even through hauling *** backwards flight and no pitchiness at all, I'll play around some more with this model. I tried this model a year ago when we last discussed this, it flies completely different on the newer version of g2.

I played around for a couple of hours, the Foiler competition 3d (came with an ad on pack I believe, may of came with g2) does fairly well on the tail so look at its parameters for the ideal settings. But this model sucks in fast flight

The 30's seem to do the best in fast forward or backwards flight and overall flight, they just suck on autos (True realisim ?) Scale the model up 20% and it seems to fall at the same speed of a 60 on 3d maunevers (bigger = you fly farther out so it appears to be slower in movement)

It seems the blade weight @ 195 g was causing the motor to load down bad, cyclic rate slows down if you use over 50% of the throw and the tail just breaks loose (never seen a heli piro so quick).

I did notice before that different speed computers did fly completely different, maybe the faster computers have the xtra processing time to do some xtra calculations that completely dork the model up. I'll play around with the physics resolutions and the 3 inertia parameters and see if it helps any. Winter's coming so I defintely need to find a good sim model to fly!

I guess the best option is to setup one model for fai, one for 3d and one for autos, glad we dont have to do that in real life!

And I thought the real Raptor 60 was problematic

It did lock the computer hard twice, thats an achievement under win 2000!

sink rate

Try reducing the model's visual scale. At larger scales (2.0 for example), the model descends too slowly. At smaller scales, it drops too quickly.

The F1 model feels kinda 30-ish to me at 1.0, but feels pretty good to at about 1.3.

Auger,

I'm using G2 w/ Win2K.

My Tx interface fails from time to time with a cryptic error message too. The easiest way to get going again is to reregister the tx driver. This can be done by dbl-clicking TxInterface.reg which should be in the directory where G2 was installed.

The FF physics (all orientations) seem to have taken a dive after the 301 patch - hope this will be addressed soon.

G2 Sim

I have found a downloadable heli from the G2 site that emulates the xcell Fury by Jason Krause. I have made it fly more realistic by adding 1 lb to the fuse weight and reduced the visual size. I run about 35% expo and it is OK. It does not hover like the real thing but for aerobatics it's not bad.

Hi,

I notice the colder it gets out side the more realistic the sim feels, I believe its the fact that I a'int flyin the real thing much lately.... I did get winxp installed on the machine and the lock ups dissappeared

So far on the gyro, some improvement by making the vertical fin as small as possible, increase the diameter of the tail rotor by an 1" (increasing the t/r pitch range did'nt help) and the biggest help was lightening the blades up so the motor would'nt load down.

Maybe the gv-1 in the sim has some problems, I'll try disabling it next time. We should get a few of us together and try comparing notes during a g2 multiplayer session???

The only thing that scares me is I go through all this work to get it flying rite again and a new upgrade comes out that completely screws it up again..........

Bob, Thanks I'll try it "when" it happens next time around. I was trying to re-install it from the device manager page to no avail which meant uninstall, install rf deluxe, upgrade to g2, install patch, test with thingers crossed, install add on packs and have it fail within a few days

Have you tried the New FMS?

I've been using the New FMS a FREE Flight Sim Download from http://n.ethz.ch/student/mmoeller/fms/index_e.html This is the FMS home page. There are a great number of Heli and aircraft that you can download as well as a program to design your own! you will need an adapter that you can make from parts at Radio Shack so you can use your Transmitter! (I Did and if I can do it so can you !!)
