Aerial Photography and Video > 'strap a servo to the camera' method --

Hi,
I am currently running the Canon A80 digital camera. To my knowledge the A80 is unable to do shutter activation using a LANC or ACC terminal conected circuit.

As mentioned by some experenced pilots on this form, a hack can be done by opening the camera and connecting directly to the shutter release trigger/wires. --- I thought about it a little more, and I am deciding against this method for the time being,.

So, I am looking to test my Mount and Voyager 50 E within the next 2 weeks.
For this I am going to be using the only other option I can think of, a servo strapped on to trigger/activate the shutter switch.

** I am sure there are other using this method, because not all camera have the LANC or ACC terminals.

If anyone here using this method to trigger the shutter for a shot would like, they are more then welcome to post pictures, discussions about the 'strap a servo to the camera' method for taking their shots.

I am looking to get some ideas on how to setup my Airfoil Carbon M30 mount with my Canon A80 using this method.....

any and all help, replies would be greatly appreciated here.

thanks everyone, I hope there are other pilots thinking of the same method. I am hoping this thread can give them and myself more insight into this method.

Thanks!

I did basically that for my first camera. Instead of strapping the servo to the camera, I attached a thin horizontal bar to the mount right above the camera and bolted the servo to that. I figured that it would be stronger and more easily repeatable when I removed the camera (my wife's!) and replaced it on the mount. Worked great!

Just make sure you set your ATV's so you aren't burning out the servo and using up your battery needlessly!

Hope that this gives you some ideas.

I no longer trigger my camera this way but here is a photo of the servo attached on the flash holder.

I used a 5" repair strap from the local Home Depot, some AL flat bar, and some 1/4" threaded rod.

The top plate with the servo comes off by unscrewing the black wings. Up under the plate are nuts on the threaded rod, to adjust the height of the servo plate.

The thumb screw in the bottom is used to attach the camera via the tripod socket. Yes, it is upside down, I place it that way so as not to loose it when the camera isn't there.

Sorry the camera is missing, I needed it to take the shot.

I used a plastic box with the servo on it for my A40 but any of the above methods will do it.

You just have to get the servo travel set to hold the button half down at half stick and full down to shoot at full stick.
My Cam Tx has a PB for shutter and slide sw for AF in place of the stick gimbal.
slide sw on to set AF then PB to shoot
or sl sw off and just PB to shoot.

Which servo for shutter?

Hey guys, wow some great up close shots here, just want I was looking for!!

I did some reseach and in fact I am unable to use the electronic remote shutter release with the Canon A80. I am indeed going with the standard servo to 'flip the shutter switch'.

Angelos: That's a great way to mount your servo!! I do not have a hot shoe for flash, so I am doing to be making up something like flyboy or llamatrails got going there.

Just wondering what you guys recommend for a servo to carry out this function? Maybe a mini servo or standard size, brand?

I am going to be using a PCM JR 649S 9ch.

thanks again for the replies guys!

I'm using two tiny Hitec HS-55's for shutter and zoom on the remote of the Sony DSC-V1.

Just set your ATV's so you don't burn them out by pressing too hard!

Any cheapy servo will do the job.

Top box is the one I used for the A40 Canon
The servo is attached to the box, camera goes in box, keeps smeg off camera.

thanks for the replies.

I will keep the hitec servo in mind for the shutter.

You guys have some neat setups out there....

I am going to be using some similar, but I am hoping to make brackets with adjustable arms so I can vary where the servo and horn can be -- in case I use an alternate camera or something.

thanks guys.
cheers,

If you have an SLR type remote socket, you could do something like this;

What servo do you recommand for shutter?

What servo do you recommand for shutter?

Greg, you mentioned the Hitec 55 servo.
it has 16oz-in torque, is this enough for the shutter you think?

I installed the foam on the legs of my Airfoil mount tonight, I am ordering a servo for shutter tomorrow .

what do you guys think about the hitec 55 servo, any other recommendations for shutter servo?

cheers,
Dean

Most camera shutters purposely don't take a lot of force to snap, they don't want to accidentally shake the camera as you push it.

the alum. bar method.

I picked up an alum bar similar to what flyboy had made up a few posts above.

I need to bend it, then take some weight off the bar, and see how I can fit it to the M1 30 mount.

I will post my results later this weekend.

cheers, and thanks for your ideas and design suggestions!
