Robbe Cuatro - Millennium - Nova - Dyna-X > Futura SE tail fin

HI guys, I have a new Futura SE, which I bought from Paul, and I am pretty sure it is the newer style kit.

Paul has been great in dealing with some issues I had, but I have not contacted him yet on this one, as I thought maybe someone here can help me first.

The problem is that when I tighten down the vertical fin, it puts the tail gears in a bind, even if you just barely snug it down.

I have to run the fin so loose, that you can move it back and forth by hand.

Thanks,
Raj

Did the kit contain the 'anti-crush' insert that
is supposed to aleviate that problem?

If it is the new kit it should have the anti crush insert, the double oring head and I believe the yellow canopy.

Actually, the anti crush insert is to prevent premature wear of the bearings I thought, I never heard that the tightening was evident in the gear mesh, not to say it isn''t of course.

Maybe your gear mesh is too tight and the slightest shift in alignment is causing the gears to bind?

new kit?

Well, I'm not sure about the anti crush insert, i'll have to check on that, but I sure didn't have a double o-ring head or a yellow canopy????

I did however have the new torque tube bearing and a white canopy.

The gear mesh was perfect, I've built about 3 x-cells and am familiar with setting gear mesh :+)

Any other replies are appreciated,
Raj

Anti-Crush Insert

Raj,

Yes your kit should have a cnc machined alunimum anti-crush insert for the tail box. One end is beveled, and the two bearings PN#4303 should be pressed into the alunimum anti-crush insert.

Actualy on my plans, (plan #2) you will see the insert and the two bearings. The insert part number is #4833 while a #4303 bearing is pressed into each end.

When you install the shaft #4629, use a tooth pick and wick red perm loc-tite between the bearing inner races, and shaft #4629. If the shaft spinns freely inside the inner bearing races you will get radio hits, it's a know cause, and fix. Also red loc-tite the outer bearings into the aluminum anti crush insert.

Hope this helps,

tail gear problem

I saw those problems here in Europe.
there are 2 things to do. 1- insert the inserts that will not give you the possibility to overtight the gear box.
second, and most of people over her did it, to change to metal gearbox, where is no flexibility possible. this option is an expensive one, but good one.
re check again the kit, and instructions.
good luck

Raj,

I've seen this on 4 kits I've built in the last little while (2 SE's, Mille II, Nova - same parts) - even with the anti crush insert the tail gears bind up if the bolts are too tight.

My solution has been to make them just slightly snug until the gearbox has broken in a bit, then snug them up a but more. Even with the insert in place these bolts can't be tight - just snug.

Good luck.
