Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Which Raptor Kit?

I am planning to purchase my first Heli & have decided to go for the Raptor 30.

I am unsure if i should opt for the 90% pre-built or the self-assembly kit.

I believe the pre-built comes with the Thunder Tiger 36H is this engine the best choice or should i go for the self-assembly & get an OS?

Has anyone got any experience with the 36H in the 30?

Also would i be correct to assuming that the pre-built comes with more bull races?

Any input would be appreciated.

Raptor 30

Buy the unasembled kit and save your self the money. A lot of people say the tt36 motor is junk but i have not had any problems yet.You will need to get the 20 bearing upgrade and upgrade muffler from ace.The original muffler just does not have the proper back pressure. It took me about 12 hours to assemble and this was my firt time. Check out Fritz Cat website for assembly instuctions a big help.Find someone at a club to help fine tune it and have fun flying!!

As Brad said:

You will be "building it yourself" sooner ar later and its nice to have done it once with "clean" parts

Thanks for the info guys, i was swaying towards the self-assembly kit anyway.

Where can i get hold of the bearing upgrades?

Still unsure which way to go with the engine, with it being self-assembly i have a free choice any suggestions?

Get the OS if your not a gambling man. With the TT36, you either get a good one or a bad one. Its not worth the headache if you get a bad one.

First timer

Hi lamb,

I got my R30 about 1 yr ago and it's been a blast! Definitely go for the kit, like the man said "You will be building it yourself sooner ar later"

I used to fly planks back when helis were still on the bleeding edge and had lots of good experiences with OS engines so, not being a gambling man, I decided to stick with the OS 32. It is very reliable (never had to do an unexpected auto yet!). Only thing was that the carb was not adjusted correctly - the low speed needle was turned out about 5 turns (should be about 2). I would recommend sticking a new engine on a run-up stand and playing with it until it hummms just right. I've also heard of little surprises being left in the engine by the manufacturer (metal shavings) so take it apart and clean thoroughly (I've heard the same lack of Quality Control applies to car engines and it's always a good idea to do an oil change as soon as possible after buying a new car!)

BUILDING IS FUN

I agree with everyone else. Go for the unassembled kit and get the 20BB upgrade. I got mine about 3 months ago and had it built in less than 2 days. I had to wait a few extra days b\c my radio was on backorder before i could fly it. You really learn the helicopter by building it which comes in handy if you ever need to replace parts after a crash or just want upgrade. Heliproz sells the unbuilt version with the 20BB upgrade plust it has free shipping. And as with what everyone else is saying, ive been using OS engines on everything i fly (planks, helis, cars) and they are in my opinion the best.

Build it!

Definately build it!!! I'm new to the hobby, and I got the R30 kit. Only took a couple of evenings to put it together, although I did make a few mistakes. Check out the Fritz the Cat site (http://members.telocity.com/fritzthecat/raptor50.html). He has an awesome supplement to the Raptor Manual.

Pay CLOSE attention to the pictures, and look ahead at the assembled versions in the manual to help you get things right. I personally made a couple flips and mislocating of items, most of which I caught later in the assembly when things didn't match up right. Looking at other pictures farther back in the manual can help prevent this.

I'm sure my experience in assembling the kit will pay off when it comes time to "reassemble" it.

A note or two... don't overtighten screws! I did this on a couple things like the bottom of the main shaft (which messes with the autorotation bearing), use CA or loctite as Fritz recommends.

Good luck and good flying.
