Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Tail rotor vibration on R60

Location:

Even from brand new my tail rotor has had a vibration on my Raptor 60. I tried to balance the stock tail rotors but I've had to balance the hub and grip asmb. without the rotors because I have not been able to get them in a perfectly straight line, so I end up with an inaccurate balance. I now have MS rotors and the vibration is not as bad but is still there, this tells me my blade grips are not balanced, Right? I’ve removed a little bit of material off the heavy grip but I feel if I can’t balance the hub, grips, and rotors together I’m not getting the best balance possible. I need some ideas on how other people fix this condition. I use a magnetic balancer made by Top Flight, I also use it for plank props, it works excellent, and it even has balanced the tail rotor blades on my R30 perfectly.

could be several things, first is your enginge running to rich this will make the tail vibrate and bounce. Next would be your tail rotor shaft it may have a slight bend in it, could also be the fan needs to be balanced. My R60 tail vibrated until I got the engine broke in and could start leaning it out now it's smooth as silk. Good Luck!

make sure the torque tube bearing is not in the "middle" of the tail boom !

I do beleive the engine is running rich still, I don't have a ton of time on it so I have been keeping it a bit rich. Never thought about engine mixture being a concern. If I remember correctly it seems to be more apparent when the engine is cold/cool. Still there when its warm but not as bad.

I'm not sure the torque tube bearing is in the middle, I know it's close. Why would this cause a vibration if it's in the center?

The torque tube carrier bearing being centered is a resonance issue. If the bearing is placed at the exact middle of the torque tube the two equal lengths will resonate, if you place the bearing off center the length on each side is now unequal and this supposedly stops the resonance.

Cool I will try to slide it towards the rear some and see what happens. I was thinking about installing another bearing support for a total of 2, what do ya think?

Mine is just fine with one but if you try two just make sure they are not spaced equally. Good Luck!

It has been mentioned to me by someone else to spin up the rear blades with the bolts tight so when I shut down the blades will be straight out and then I could get an accurate balance. Im going to try this, in the past I've not been able to get the blades straight with the grips to get an accurate balance. The shaft is new, I've just replaced it and the rotor blades. Thanks for the info.

Steve is right, dry dampners will make the tail bounce quite a bit, pull the spindle and lube it up with some silicon grease, lithium grease will work too but I prefer silicon.

I've installed the oring upgrade from Ricks. The vibration in the tail was there before and after. What did go away was the wobble as the main blades spin up. Thanks.
