I have been flying V-tech pipes for 15 years, I know how to tune a pipe and I fully understand how a pipe works. Did you take two minutes to read the article I directed you to? The GV-1 pipe combo works for me because I know what I am doing not because the planets all lined up on the day I installed it.
Consider the following:
A) "The pipe acts like a governor” I guess that is true in so much as the pipe and it’s RPM window can affect engine RPM. It however, does not act like a true governor. It has a very narrow range of operation and unless your throttle and pitch curves are dead on the pipe governing effect will be non-effective.
B) "Why does he (Curtis) NOT recommend using one with the MP pipe?" Well, it is my guess that he knows that people will not get this combination to work correctly and if it is not set up right the governor will just compound the problem. Keep in mind that it is usually a beginner or someone who has zero experience with a tuned pipe that asks these questions so he probably gives that answer to keep them out of trouble.
So, how does the governor compound the problem and why is it not
recommended to use it with a MP?
Simple, the only job of a governor is to maintain a pre-set RPM. It does not care about anything else, just that RPM. The MP on the other hand lives and dies by RPM. When the engine and pipe are in tune, they will make a great amount of power. Change the RPM and the engine will fall off of the pipe and the power output of the engine will drop. This is all well and good and with out a governor you would just fly with reduced power and engine RPM's, but if you have a governor installed the governor will just keep driving the throttle barrel more and more open trying to get to the set RPM and in the process of doing that will load the engine more. This will cause engine RPM to drop even more. The pipe will, because of the increased drop in RPM's will become even less effective. The governor will drive the barrel open all the way trying to get to the set RPM. This circle of events eventually will cause a total loss of power and most likely a flame out. So I imagine that is why the recommendation of not to use the GV-1 with the MP.
Can the GV-1 be used with a MP? Yep, and it works 100%
Can the GV-1 cause problems with a MP? Yep, if you don't know what you are doing.
Do I think I know more than CYB? Nope, never said I did but keep in mind that CYB questioned what the experts said to him back when he was just a beginner. That is most likely how he got to where he is today, by not taking everything at face value.
