Scale Model RC Helicopters > How to put in windows

Hi

Far from that stage and just beginning to squeeze a raptor into a Graupner 46 squirrel fuselage.

The fuse has frame insets after cutting out the holes, like an inlay that you sit the window on.

Im concerned if I glue them in they'll look pretty crappy as you'll see the glue through the glass.

I have also seen varios window gaskets whcih look ok, has anyone used these, they dont look real scale though do they, mind you its a rappie so I'm not gonna go too mad.

Any suggestions with example pictures of the finished product helpful.

Cheers

Lee

What I have done is this. Get some decent clear plastic sheets that are similar in thickness to the supplied windows. If you want them to be form fitted I cut them at least a 1/2" larger than the window. Put on a pair of gloves and heat it up with a hair dryer for about 30-40 secs. i then use a rolled up towel and push it out from the inside of the window very tightely. Hold it for about 30 secs till cool and it you do it right it should bulge out a little and look pretty decent. I then glue it around inside edge with Household Goop. This stuff is clear, flexible and holds great. It can't be seen from the outside.
For windows such as are on my Funkey Twin Star which have a lip on them I have glued small pieces of plywood squares inside the four corners of each window. These windows do not to to be moulded as they are flat. cut the windows oversize drill 4 holes in the corners to correspond with the plywood mounts and the attach with small screws. This is all done from inside so no glue is necessary and the windows are removable too.
For the main windows I never use glue and again use my small plywood mounts in each of the four corners. I use small screws to attach these windows. You could also put some 2-56 blind nuts behind these mounts first and attach the windshield with 2-56 black socket screws which look a little nicer. Gaskets would be torturous work!
