My Thoughts

Let me begin by saying I do not "hate" Century helis...

However, there are several reasons why I would NEVER buy or recommend one to someone. Let me give you a run down...

First off... The Hawk line of helicoptes are "OK" helis. Not great, not even good, just ok. If thery were truly outstanding, you would see a ton of them at every flying field. In reality, you might be lucky to see even one at any given field.

That brings up the issue of getting help. If you have a question and no one at your field has ever seen or owned one, how do you except to get good help?

The Hawk line is still using an "old fashioned" wire drive tail rotor. Does not sound like a big deal, but just wait. Most people are opting for good heading hold gyros like the GY-401 with the 9253 (this is an excellent gyro). What happens is your super good gyro will place a lot of load on the tail rotor. That load is transfered into the wire drive system and gets into a function called "tail rotor wind up". This is where the wire begins to twist under torsional load. After a while, all that twisting fatigues the wire and causes it to break. No you have NO TAIL ROTOR ANYMORE! Not a good thing.

Next, you have to consider what happens when you crash. You can just go to your local hobby store and buy the parts you need, right? WRONG!!! I challange you to walk into any hobby shop and find parts for the Hawk helicopter. I will bet you money that you will be hard pressed to find hobby any hobby shops that actuall carry Hawk parts.

No problem you say. I will just mail order them from Heli-World (aka Century). First off, Heli World has a very bad reputation for poor customer service. Ever time I have delt with them it has been nothing but headaches. Also, you can expect to wait months at a time for parts to be shipped to you from a backorder. My good friend had to wait 3 months for a part to come in that he needed. He was grounded all summer.

Now a little food for thought. You can get youself a Raptor or a Shuttle. They are proven to be good fliers. You can go to any flying field and expect to see tons of Raptors and Shuttles. If you have a question or need help, I have no doubt that you will find the answer. As for parts, just walk into any hobby shop and I bet you will find a full line of Raptor and Shuttle parts IN STOCK.

Instead of trying to save $50 in the short run... Do yourself a favor and look at the big picture. You will be better off if you avoid the Hawk.

Hawks

I built a couple and test flown for other people. I think they're ok. Their drawback is distribution. That is you'll have to get your parts from helicopter world, unless you LHS carries parts. Helicopter world can be a bit trying at times. We have a LHS who carries the hawk line so parts aren't a big deal around here.

As far as the wire drive and the new HH gyros go, Century makes a tube drive upgrade (aprox. $50). This should solve the T/R wire drive problem.

I agree with the previous post on this point, see what people are buying in your area or flying field. If you have veteran flyers around they still should be able to give you proper help on a Century Hawk. The Rotor head looks to be a copy of the Miniature Head. The newer Hawks advertise more BB's that say the Hawk I or the Hawk II.

The two I've flown were very stable in the hover.

I Fly a Raptor 30 and 2 X-cells. I've also owned and flown a Nexus 30.
Remeber No Heli is perfect they each have their own unique set of problems or flaws. Buy what ever you have the largest support base in your area for.

My $.02

Duh!!! I Just Looked At The Link

I feel like a dork now... I typed all that BEFORE I looked at that link you posted.

That link goes to a Century Ninja 46. Those were some neat looking helis. I have never owned one, but I have seen them fly. They were some pretty good flying helicopters.

However, they have not been made in many years. I would suggest you check to see if parts are available. To the best of my knowledge, parts are no longer made for this helicopter. Why would you want to buy a helicopter that you cant get parts for?

Also, reference Ebay. BE VERY CAREFUL. I have seen lots of people get ripped off. It is very hard to tell the condition of a heli over the computer...

Condition

Well when you supersize the close-up of the rotor you can see scratches. im guesssing this heli has seen quite a few crashes.

im really looking for the full package. radio, gyros, servos, and starting stuff. but thats so far and few between

Don't buy a heli that's not being made anymore !!
I'm not going to get into an argument here, I own both the Raptor and the Hawk4 SE2, the Hawks do have more parts, but I would sell my Raptor before I would sell my Hawk !!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Don't buy a heli that is not made anymore. Might be hard to find parts for.

I have a Hawk 4 and a Sceadu 30. I like both. For the flying I do, the both work. I am about a day or two away from getting the ba**s to try out some simple aerobatics (loops, stall turns) and will use the Hawk. It is just cheaper if I total it.
