i hated to chime in on this subject because of the back lash but...
first thing is mr. hashimoto works for the largest rc company on the planet do you actually think that hirobo would not put 100% effort in a machine for him for only one purpose other than too win an f3c comp? his hands did not even touch that heli till that day. this is an issue with alot of sports today the big companys and the big money wins. try too go buy that honda rc45 that just won the suberbike race.or howabout that audi in the 24 hour indurance race.
second thing is jk has only had the ion for less than a year and it has changed several times in that period (prototype)
wait till he has had it as long as the fury and it probally wont be slow motion any more

One point I have not seen mentioned is how much easier an electric will travel. No fuel, residue, starters etc. Everyone seems to be planning to wait and see. Is anyone going to buy one?

Its on order with Ricks, just hope I am high enough on the list.

I get to fly with JK quite a bit, and trust me he flys the Ion just like his 90. No slow motion stuff, extreme all the way. Last time I spoke to him he had indicated that the packs were coming down in price too the $400 -500 range.

i dare to predict in a decade IC engines for RC would become a thing of the past. electric induces no fuss, no slime, no noise, just plug and fly. cost is the only thing that may hold it down for the time being. however, LI-PO's for RC being at its extreme infancy (it came out only a couple of years ago for crying out loud) it already rivaled the best IC engines in terms of performance. the sky's the limit for electric RC. why would anyone want to deal with slime mills? yuck!

Don't mince words, Sam. What do you really think?

that'll be great, when they get the power density
up, the 'many people are too stupid to charge
them w/o burning down their house/car/model'
problem solved and the general charge speed &
cost issues down.

until then, I'll take the slime machine vs. the
limited potential and fun factor of electric

I think what is being missed here is that this is a hobby. This means it doesn't matter which is better. All that matters is that you enjoy it.

In the grand scheme of things, as the performance of electrics improves, more people will try it and make the switch (pun!) , but this is no reason for a die hard engine tinkerer to fly electric regardless of how the relative performance changes in future.

OK guys, I have reading this thread and have to say, the overall theme is that people think that electrics will just get better as the years come and go.

I have been flying both electric and glow helicopters. and I'd have to say, When I go the field, I'd rather take the glow heli. I'd love to see how many people are going to get the @#%$ waiting for their power packs to charge at the field while other pilots get in Ten flight before you. then you fly for 10 mins and have to wait again. I'm not sure about anyone else but I have to drive almost an hour to get to a field, and I If was to spend the day there waiting for batteries to charge I could of done that at home.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the no mess deal with electrics and they were great for that quick fly during lunch or one afternoon down at the local park. But for the field.......you will all soon realise that unless you have 10 battery packs standing by (cost?) it won't be worth it.

Wow, only $400-500 for the battery packs? I guess I'll take a dozen.

Seriously, I can't imagine ever flying a big electric with that sort of cost for batteries. I fly lithiums on small indoor 3D planes, but the packs only cost maybe $25 a piece. I can live with that, but $400-500 is simply not realistic.

Ozheli.

I understand what you are saying ozheli and this is one of the differences between the two. Not everyone has the same values. For some people, me included, it doesn't matter that in the past and still today it is quicker to refuel with glow because I the other benefits of electric are more important to me.

There are other ways around the waiting issue. Like having several electric helis. I like that one but it adds to the cost of course.

The way technology is going it may not always be that we are waiting for batteries to charge. We'll see.

I'm quite excited about how the technology is progressing in the hobby. Not just batteries and electric power systems, but radio technology as well. These new digital PPM receivers are amazing. I'm sure in the near future we won't have to worry about frequency control as new radio transmission technologies come along. And look at how MEMS devices have improved the gyros. Light years ahead of the old mechanical ones.

As a general comment, I believe basing what we will be doing based on today's technology is a mistake. I know, my next new car will not be an Oldsmobile.
