Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > Need help with GY 401 hitec 605b tail wags like crazy

I have a big problem. I am addicted to helis

I have another smaller problem. I got a gy 401 on my raptor 30 hooked up to a hitec 605 servo (its a 0.16sec which is ok i guess) but i cannot keep the tail from wagging. When i say wagging i mean real wagging like 40 degrees in either direction and the more it waggs the more it turns. I have tried lowering the gain didnt help tried the delay setting on up to 25 didnt help. I need help. The servo is boom mounted. I have had a gy401/9253 combo on this bird before and had no problems. I have since moved the combo to my Ergo. and put a hitec 605 on the raptor and its just been hell. Need help.

thanks

that makes it tough.
try useing a shorter servo arm, that will minimise the centering errors in the servo.
do as much as ya can to both make the inkage slop free to the tail , AND to insure that it does not bind in any way.
good luckm,rdfc

hmm binding is a issue, the pitch fork binds if the slider moves toward the gear case. I am using a long servo arm i'll try shortening it

The 605 tends to suck for tail applications
because although the specs look somewhat impressive,
they just aren't very good in the very critical
(to tail rotor application) of re-centering
accuracy.

You'd really be better off w/ a different servo,
even a 525 and sell the 605 to some planker.

If you don't get the 605 off of the tail, you will be spending a lot of money to pay for a new heli. It WILL fail! Trust me, I've been there.

If you are having trouble affording a better quality servo than the 605BB, you best wait and fly only when you can. The crash that is going to happen when that 605BB dies in flight is going to cost you A LOT more than the upgrade to a better servo. At least you'll lose a model. At worst, you could hurt yourself, too.

Hitec 605's

Are they really that bad in a heli?? I use them on my planks, but I know they are worlds apart. I did put one on the collective of my raptor 30.. should I rethink that strategy or should it be ok for collective??

Tail Wag

Is the 605 a digital servo? If not, did you flip the little switch on the gyro to turn off the digital servo function?

ok i took the 605 of and put a jr531 in its place that helped alot a little fine tuning and the tail will settle down even more almost all of the wagging is gone so i guess the 605 is a terrible rudder servo.

Dr.Ben the 605 was purchased awhile back i just put it on the tail cause that was the fastest servo i have that was not mounted in a heli

deckerv i use 605s on my cyclics on my raptor 30 they are fine there
I use a hitec digital on my collective I have not had any problems. Except for putting the 605 on the tail

BimmerM3 605 is not a digital servo and even if it was you still cannot use the digital setting on the gy 401 with the digital setting you can only use the 9253.

Thanks for all the help

The 605 is a fairly strong servo but is very prone to failing in flight! I have also had this servo fail on airplanes too. The 545 and 525 and possibly the digitals are a far better choice from Hitec. I have run the 545's in 60's for a while now with no problems.

A 401 will burn up a cheap servo (matter of fact it will burn up a decent servo that is not made for it (even in non Futaba digital mode)). I had a MPI 890 or whatever at .09 speed that lasted only 4 flights before it gave up on a 401. Use one of the intended servos with this gyro!! It is best in the long run!

gyro/servo

The 605 is not the best, but the 525 will work fine with the 401.
605's are powerfull but suffer from poor centering. Dont try using them
on a ccpm set up (you will have quite a hand full to fly) If you can, go to
the 5625 digitals on every thing ( not needed on throttle ) you will be suprised how smooth and precice it will fly with out a lot of cost.
Currently using 5625's on a bergen gasser for pitch and cyclic,
525 for throttle. (401 gyro / 9253)on rudder. In the past, on 60 glow copters the 401 will work with 525 or the 5625 with good results.
Hope this helps.

HS525.

The HS525 is a well trusted high speed servo. It at least has a 5 pole motor and centers a bit better.I started with one my self and never had a problem. It now is my throttle servo and still going strong.

took out the 605 and put in a JR 53,1 it helped a bit but now i have drift. The tail drifts to the left ( i think i had the drift with the 605 in there too but since it was wagging like crazy I didnt notice it) so i took my 9253 out of my Ergo and replaced the JR 531 still have drift so i had to give 3 clicks with the left trim and the tail locks now but the gyro light is blinking 2 blinks and a small pause, 2 blinks and a small pause and so on. I dont understand what that means. I thought the gyro didn't center so i shut the engine down and turned the heli off and then back on it centered so i hovered for a minute then brought it back down and it was blinking again. So i centered it again took it up and brought it down it was blinking. Need some more help. There is no revo mixing.
and atv's are set to 100. Gain is set at 70.

Any ideas ?? I hope its not a bad gyro.

DRIFT UPDATE: Apparently i was dumb enough not to check the revo mixing properly, stupid Jr 622 menu system. Drift problem solved

This is why i love my 8103 everything is on the same menu screen
