I'm now into the machining stage of "The spirit of Boone's Farm" V2. The original was based on mini servos, this one uses micro servos. I cut the mini out of carbon fiber plate, but didn't like it enough to cut a set.

This version uses 5 micro servos (HS85BBs). I sectioned a minair maingear to make it much thinner, and removed one of the sprague bearings (the auto hub has two), and machined a lot of metal out of the hub. It will be CCPM with bellcrank actuation.

Here is the heli side by side with the mainframe section of a Minair 50 frameset. The minair frameset also has a front tray which isn't shown. The bottom parts for my frame are cut, but not installed in this picture. It's made from 5052 aluminum (.063) and poorly anodized blue. The final version will likely be cut in carbon fiber after the mockups are done. All but one of the holes lined up the first time. I need to move the tail rotor drive hub hole down. The assembly as shown weighs 451 grams, of which 74 is the gear, and 122 the mainshaft. I'm looking at going with a 6mm mainshaft if possible, but I need to find another gear arrangment. I'm going to run it clutchless, but with an auto hub if possible. I'm shooting for 6 pounds in the air.

Enough blabber.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks, John Cadwell

have you thought about a hollow main mast? I've got one here on my SE, if you need it, drop me a line.

Any idea how much it weighs? I was looking at aluminum as well.

best guesstamate is 1/3 less than the stock main mast (I can measure when I get home and figure out how much material was removed). when are you around tonight? I'll give you a call.

how about a titanium mainshaft. they are supposed to be very light.

Good spec. alloy (hollow) should save you some weight on the mainshaft, same with the feathering spindle, tail-shaft etc.

UPDATE

Here is the latest revision. Conservitively ported Magnum GP for a testbed engine. The heli weighs 1500 grams as is right now. I think it will weigh less than 5 pounds ready to fly. All the parts fit perfectly. Cut out of carbon weave that has been vacuum bagged with breather, so it is as light as possible. Also leaves a matte finish though.

Looks pretty sweet

Jon,

When my knees and hips wear out, will you machine me some new ones?

Trevor

p.s. look forward to seeing you when you get back in town. keep me posted on your projects. I'll check RR periodically for updates, too

I made a very similar Heli 3 years ago it came in at 6.9 LBS with an OS91 and Muscle Pipe. Originally it had a fly barless head but that proved to be uncontrollable. We now have a metal head on it. Been winning a lot of drag races with it. I have another one in the works that should allow about 18 degrees of pitch at launch with out stalling the blades.

good work!

By the way I see you frequent the CNC zone.

I think I've seen it. Did you guys bring it down to the Tri Cities Fun Fly? Are you working with Keith Lapointe? I'm from the Tri Cities, and going to school down in CA. I do frequent CNC zone, hopefully it continues to grow like this site, and gets even better.

Hey Trevor, I heard about a dentist in the Tri Cities that bought a CNC crown mill. He takes impressions of the prepared tooth, then has a digitizer, and then mills a crown while the patient waits. No lab fees, and the crown is done in the same day, so there is no temporary either, and they fit perfectly. Costs about 70K. Pretty sweet though.

Take care, John

Sameone we had gearing problems in TriCities. Also the muscle pipe needs to go It limits RPM. Since you seen it we put 9:3 *1 gears in it no lbogging at alunch now. I actually think it would be faster with a 60 because of the engines ability to rev higher. Weight is not the issue.

We took Spincity out at Brooks although not by much. Lapointe's job as pilot is in question.

I just finished converting a RongFU gearhead mill to 4 axis CNC. I should know today weather I got a Bridgeport at auction for $500 which I will convert to CNC.

I've got a little Taig 3 Axis on steppers, a box full of 4 servos and Geckos that I was thinking of putting on the Taig (kind of overkill) and a 7x14 minilathe that is manual. Being a student, I have to keep all my stuff small and light, so I can move it. It hurts that I could have bought a Bridgeport and CNC'd it for the same price as this Taig, but I can't move 7000lbs very easily

Dave, I don't think I'll be out this weekend. Other than having nothing that flys (which I could remedy), my girlfriend is flying in from Denver for the weekend (which I "won't" remedy). Thank God it finally stopped raining.

I need to finish up a Vario mutilation project I'm working on right now as well, then I can get some helis in the air. I shoehorned a YS91 into Vario Extreme mechanics, rearranged the servo layouts with new sideplates, moved the gas tank to under the mainshaft, and converted it to a belt tail drive to save weight. Fun stuff.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Cerec

Jon,

I've seen that machine that makes the crown while you wait. It's 90k, and does a pretty good job. Main problem with it is the margin (where the crown meets the tooth) is often somewhat "open" meaning it's not an intimate fit. The cement fills in this void, but then the seal is only as good as the cement, and cements don't last forever. A nicely fit gold crown where the gold lightly squeezes the tooth can last 50 years if kept clean.

The technology is getting there. It's better than it was a few years ago. I'm watching to see where it goes from here!
