I finally got the gyro problems worked out and have the new boom and boom supports on my Raptor (which I bent the other day on my first attempt)...

It was great!! I actually managed to hover briefly, but the wind was picking up and causing havok! I almost lost it once when the wind almost flipped it on it's side, that was freakin scary!! I dont know how I saved it!!

Here's proof that I finally got it in the air! I was at the stick and my friend was taking the pictures...

Woohoo!! I love this hobby!! I think I'm going to buy the FMA co-pilot though, it would have been a big help today! It's almost always windy here in Saskatchewan!

Congrats man!

One thing though, I don't like the proximity of buildings, bushes etc in your picture
You would be better flying in an area with no obstructions just now as, believe me, the heli will "escape" on occasion until you are more proficient.

Fly Safe.

Cheers

Actually, the picture is kinda deceiving, there is alot of room between the buildings and stuff. I didn't find it too difficult keeping it contained to that area, if only the wind would die down some around here...

I've still got a high from the experience!

The problem with buildings and trees, is the rolling turbulence in the wind "shadow" it can extend for 1/2 mile down wind. The wind itself is not to difficult to deal with. Congratulations

Tracking

RaptorHelius,

Way to go bud. Just keep burning fuel and working on authority in hovering at all orientations.

Be careful hovering that close to objects. Once a heli gets going it keeps accelerating HARD and can get away very, very, quickly. I would recommend that you find an open soccer field or better yet a AMA or equivalent field there in Canada.

Also, the picture could be decieving but your tracking looks off.

Tracking...

I'll keep my eye on it when I take it out next.. Any tell tale signs that the blades are out? what should I be looking for?

Thanks

Nice Paint Job!!

Sweet Raptor!! Can you give me some details on how you painted it?

I can see why I could get too used the training gear! That hoop saved my heli soooooo many times!! I was thinking about making a really nice carbon fiber one and leaving it on all the time!! LOL , just kidding I think!!

with one of the link

pick that longer link comming from swah all the way up..(dono exact name) and mark the blade grip (to remember which one you adjusted) . adjust the longer link to either increase or decrease the length.. now check the tracking ..if it is worse , reverse the adjustment.. do it couple of timees ..you should be ok

Tracking

I adjust my tracking based on how it looks in a hover.

Mark one blade and blade grip with a paint marker or some method that will stay on. Then adjust the link on the other side off the head that isn't marked to get the tracking spot on. You do this by turning a link that goes from the swashplate to the blade grip. On the Raptor this link goes up to the "stabilizer" arm.

I usually do my entire setup on the blade that is marked. Then when I have all the appropriate pitch curves setup I go back and match the other blade to the marked blade at hover settings. This gets you REAL close so that when you get to the field you usually only need a 1/2 turn in or out to get it right on. If at all.

As a beginner these fine adjustments are not noticeable. But every little vibration and part that doesn't run "true" creates hamonics and vibrations. Anything that is visibly noticeable is IMO a severe problem. Unvisible/audible vibrations are very important as well but don't rear their ugly heads quite as quickly. Remember, a smooth running heli is vital to the life of the avionics and itself.

Lift,

.5 turn in or out? I'd presume you're not using the stock TT links then as the ones that came with my raptor (and a mates that flys at the same field) are one way links (lettering out). Or is this all just an old pilots tale?

Links

You won't always get to keep the lettering out on the links. It is ideal that you do but having tracking or correct mechanical alignment to me is more important than having the lettering on the links facing out.

Tracking

I could be wrong as I`m fairly new to this also...but as I understand it..on a Rappy 30 you should adjust tracking with the short "double link" that goes from the blade grip to the seasaw arm, leaving the long links at equal lenghts....somebody feel free to correct me if I`m wrong..

Won't matter.

Wess94,
I don't trust those links. You can adjust with them if you like. They are actuall easier to get to. But, they are not the most durable set of links in the kit. That is why I don't like screw/unscrewing them. I just leave them alone.

The lengths in the manual are a starting point but are no guarantee that you will end up spot on with the pitch requirements. Adjust the long link or the double links will acheive the same thing.

But, yes you can turn them since they are easiest to get to.

Raptor Blade Tracking

From Michigan_PI:
Don't use the small double links for adjust tracking. They must both be EXACTLY the same length or the geopmetry becomes asymetric. Also, I have seen several of these fail when adjusted. They used to be CA'd from the factory (not sure if they still are) and adjusting them strips the threads.
Use the long (100mm) pitch rods to adjust tracking.
