During those years prior to the introduction of Byron Fuel in 1988, we had run nearly every blend available to us and had not found a fuel in existence on the market that provided both adequate lubrication and consistent performance, run after run.
After careful consideration, we came to the only possible conclusion--if modelers were destined to have access to a fuel that would provide unequaled performance on a consistent basis and be available at a reasonable price, it was up to us, with our knowledge of modeling, resources and determination, to manufacture that fuel.
Thus, years of research on exactly what we didn’t like about fuels available at that time, merged very intensely into a carefully orchestrated process of determining exactly how a good fuel should be built.
We set several individual goals for this improved fuel to meet or exceed:
Low varnish and carbon accumulation
Superior corrosion prevention
Minimal parts wear
Excellent high pressure lubrication
Cooler operation
Immediate throttle response
Easy starting
Smooth idling
Rather than rely on current information that was available on model engine fuels, we decided to take our research back to the very beginning. It was in this way that we were able to come up with fuel formulas that met modelers' needs and not just fuels that matched or exceeded products that were available on the market at that time.
Considerable testing in the fields of lubrication formulation, total lubrication content and proper lubrication ratios began. We started with the finest castors and synthetics available on the market and made improvements from there.
Castors were favored by some modelers for lean run protection, but the side effects of varnish formation and carbon buildup had always been serious problems. So, our initial goal in the overall lubrication area was to develop a castor oil that would provide superior lubrication to castors on the market at that time but yet did not leave the same negative byproducts of standard castor oils. We kept testing and reformulating castors until we ended up with a superior castor that featured a scavenging system that limited carbon and varnish formation. The resulting castor we selected became a proprietary product and has actually been known to eliminate carbon buildup in engines which had been run previously on other brands of castor lubricated fuels. Additional testing and reformulating was done to increase the flash point of Byron Castor to assure the lubrication qualities lasted through the entire combustion process.
Synthetics were the coming thing at the time Byron Fuel was born, but most synthetics had one serious setback--they were hydroscopic by nature and invited moisture; the major source of bearing corrosion. Plus, standard synthetic oils that were miscible in alcohol were also known to be low in high pressure lubrication. Thus began another research and development program on a synthetic that would not encourage corrosion and would protect as well as castor in lean run situations.
Before any synthetic was actually engine tested, we subjected the formulas to stringent humidity cabinet testing. A general fuel blend was mixed, using the soon-to-be-tested synthetic. Common hardware (degreased and cleaned prior to testing) was bathed in the fuel. We then drained the fuel and sealed the hardware inside plastic envelopes along with water droplets and placed the envelopes in an oven for days at a time. If the hardware showed signs of corrosion in this harsh testing environment, the synthetic never made it to the engine testing stages.
The resulting Byron Synthetic is a proprietary lubricant package with fortifications in both corrosion protection and high pressure lubrication (load carrying capacity). Only Byron Fuels contain this superior synthetic formulation.
Once we decided on the initial lubrication formulas, we did initial testing to make sure we had met the performance goals that we had set. We then proceeded to long-term testing where we subjected various engine types and sizes to continuous runs of up to 5 gallons of glow fuel; a considerable duration for even large glow engines. We needed to make sure that what we had designed for short term benefits also applied to long term use as well.
After the first of the continuos run tests, engines were torn down, inspected for parts wear and carbon deposits and then rerun with a slightly varied formulation.
Only at the point where ALL our previously mentioned goals were both met individually and in combination, did we begin extensive field testing of each different blend. This was not just a program to hear what we wanted to hear, but a program designed to apply feedback from several different modeling applications to honest product evaluation and redesign.
After full field testing, feedback, design modifications, testing of the modified designs and further feedback was applied to the continually improved product, we were finally ready to introduce the new blend to the modeling world.
Our research and development program didn’t end with the introduction of the first Byron Fuel. As a matter of fact, product redesign, improvement and testing is a part of our continued commitment to our customers. Specialized fuels such as helicopter, car and high nitro boat fuels were developed with the same goals in mind and tailor-fit to the specific needs of the modeler. Product testing in all cases takes place both in competitive circles as well as in the hands of sport modelers.
As other specialized needs present themselves, Byron Fuels are developed and tested prior to full introduction to the market place. Research and development of new and improved Byron Fuels is a never-ending process at Byron Originals.
