A governer does multiple things for you;

1) It allows for a constant rotor head speed without setting up throttle curves. You simply set it for what RPM you want your main rotor turning and fly.

2) No more aileron to throttle, elevator to throttle, and rudder to throttle mixing required. The governer will maintain a constant headspeed.

3) No need to tach your blades; you know what head speed you are running because you set it up on you governer.

A governer is kind of like a cruise control on a car.

You must have a consistantly running and well tuned engine for a governer to work properly though.
