I just recieved my case order of Mach 7, and although it seems to run really well, I can't see it in the tank. The light purple color just does not stand out. What can I dye the fuel with to make it stand out more? I've been flying Baron's full synthetic 10%, which is bright orange, and it was easy to see.

Thanks, John Cadwell

Not sure if food dye would work or changes the viscosity of the fuel.. just a stab in the dark..

I have the same problem too. The purple is just to hard to see. I don't feel good about adding things to the fuel, but are we stuck with this?

Before somebody chimes in with "buy another fuel", this is all they have at the LHS and I am too cheap to mail order it

If you call FHS Supply that makes Red Max, they will gladly sell you an ounce or so of powdered dye that they use to color their own fuel. Order the heli purple dye; the red is a little light for our purposes. I have also used a few drops of Gentian Violet oral antiseptic (ask a pharmacist) which in pure purple in color.

Hey guys
goto your local computer store and get colored ink jet dye. choose any color you like and take about 10 drops per gallon, we make our own 30 % and we use the blue ink to make a highly vissable fuel, smoke looks cool too. we have not seen any problems with the fuel since we started ( 3 months ago) and does not change the visocity or oil. Take about ten drops and mix with a few drops of fuel and slowly mix into the gallon..
Hope you have good luck and hope this helped!

try the ink jet, i see no harm in trying food coloring either, cut a pop can in half put some fuel in and add a few drops of food coloring, see what happens.

I wouldnt think so..... but it seems that all tanks tend to get a colored tint after many fill ups!

And the engines? Does adding dye to the fuel affect/harm them?

There was the case of the inside of someone's engine that went green from low nitro CP fuel. Think the engine felt like throwing up after wild 3D?

Hey, what about adding glow-in-the-dark dye for night flying? Sorry, I don't know what's with me tonight, must be itching for a fly.

I think green + red will give you black fuel!

What fuel are you using? I'm using blue CP15%. Used pink PM15% & CP30% before, too expensive.

Food dye will do no harm at all. It is water based and will mix with the methanol in the fuel perfectly. I don't think it will leave any residue or stain the tank.
I meant to get some yesterday when at the supermarket.
The colour is just your personal preference, although red seems a good choice.

Do you guys think fuel dyed black will be best. The Ink jet cartridge for black is about 1/3 the cost of color?

Dye

I have been using Adams food coloring in my fuel now for 35 gallons or so. I put the desired amount of coloring in a glass cup and bake untill it is dry. Mix a little fuel in the cup and pour it in the jug.

Dyes

Dear Forum,

If you need additional dye colorants for the fuels please call one of the fuel manufacturers. I am sure any of your favorite companies would be please to send you some. I can't stress enough "DO NOT USE FOOD COLORING" or any other such type dyes or colorants! Food colorants are analine type dyes and are "salt" based and will cause rust and other problems to your engine. The dyes we use are nonanaline solvent based dyes for fuel manufacturing and are specifically designed for this purpose. If you like contact my office I would be please to send you some. You can reach me at 1-888-815-7575 toll free.

Model technics

Hi

Here in the UK model tecnics supply fuel, they also manufacture a specific dye to add to your fuel to make it more visible. Works a treat. Their helimix fule is clear so you cant see it very well.

I now use coolpower, nice and green.

Its around £2.95 a bottle (small bottle but lasts ages)

See ya

At last something we have in the UK instead of getting it from the US

If you use black inkjet ink the fuel will end up purple because it will be so diluted.

I agree with Heliraptor... 5 drops of Hi-Viz in the jug will give you enough visibility through the fuel tank while flying. This dye is developed for this purpose and will not fry your engine.

I got mine in London from Hobbystores. You could drop them a line through their web site:

Water and Methonal DO NOT MIX!!! I agree with jerry. We used a salt based dye in a YS .61 ST2 and destroyed the engine cause the dye ate away at the insides. STAY AWAY FROM FOOD DYE!! Like i said before use color ink jets refiller. It will not harm anything nor will it stain the tank, your talking about 10 drops to about gallon. If you think the color is not suitable add a tiny bit more.
