I burned 6 tanks through my Raptor 30 today, but barely left the ground except for a few scary times...

This was my first ever attempt at flying an RC heli today! The problem I kept having was that it would start spinning wildly before I could really get it up in the air... I managed to counteract the spinning a couple times and make it skim across the grass, but it was very hard to stop it from spinning, I'm thinking that something is wrong somewhere in my setup...

Any ideas??

When it did get into the air, it still wanted to spin somewhat, but it seemed stable wasn't tipping to either side...

Raptor 30, OS32SX-H, Telebee HH gyro (I think in normal mode during these attempts), Hitec Eclipse 7

Oh, also, I came down hard a once and bent my boom supports (not tht badly bent though), seems that was all the damage though...

Raptor?

It sounds like you may have your gyro set backwards, or the tail servo reversed? Piroetts can be exciting.....especially when you don't expect them!

Also make sure the tail rotor is spinning in the right direction. Anyone correct me if Im wrong. I think its clockwise looking at the heli from the right.

When you manually spin the main rotor the correct way, make sure the tail rotor comes up on the front side. If not, you rotated the belt the wrong way.

Then make sure that when you give left rudder on the transmitter, the servo pushes the tail rod backwards. If not, you forgot to reverse the rudder servo.

Then turn on the gyro and rotate the heli to the right. Watch the tail servo. The gyro should push the rod backwards again. If it does not, then it is reversed. If the gyro is reversed see if it has a setting to change that. If not, rotate it 180 degrees.

If it was in HH mode, one of those is wrong.

Now if it was in rate mode, then you might just need to trim it and/or set up REVO mixing correctly.

My advise -- make sure it is in HH mode until you build some confidence.

> When you manually spin the main rotor the correct way, make sure the tail rotor comes up on the front side

yes, when it's spinning the right way, the lower tail blade goes toward the front and up...

> Then make sure that when you give left rudder on the transmitter, the servo pushes the tail rod backwards

yes.. left rudder makes the servo arm go toward the back and pushes the rod

> Then turn on the gyro and rotate the heli to the right. Watch the tail servo. The gyro should push the rod backwards again. If it does not, then it is reversed.

yes, it seems to be correct I rotate it to the right and it pushes the rod back

I flew today in standard mode. didn't use any revo mixing... tried trimming

When I have it in HH mode, when the engine isn't running, the servo tracks and doesn't center .. is that normal?

Thanks

Ok, you said make sure I'm in heading hold mode.. I'll try it again, but this time in HH mode...

Is it normal for HH mode when the servo tracks all the way to one direction, when you apply rudder it moves, but will track back? (this is with the heli engine off and sitting on the bench)... So when I'm spinning up my blades getting ready to launch, the rudder will be all the way to one direction because of the HH mode? right??

Thanks for any help!!

No, the tail rotor should spin counter-clockwise as viewed from the RHS.

You can email Telebee at telebee@hongkong.com and they will send you back some excellent setup instructions for their gyro if you request it. I did, and it took me step by step through setup and the gyro works excellent.

When you turn on the power, the HH initializes. You want to do this from the launch spot because if you rotate the heli moving it my hand, the gyro will try to "correct" for this when you take off. What I do is make the heli light on the skids under power and move the rudder back and forth a little until I am sure what the gyro "wants" to do.

I think I figured out my HH setting now and I have it sub trimmed to make it stop hunting while it's sitting on the bench. I haven't had a chance to try flying her again, but I will let you know how it goes...

Was I having all those troubles because I was in Normal mode on my Gyro? In normal mode would I have to set up revo mixing and stuff like that? I undestand that in HH mode you want all rudder mixing turned off for the gyro to do it's thing right...

I'm getting the itch to try her again, but the wind is picking up here again today!! I'm addicted now anyways, the day before yesterday when I first tried to fly her I spent 2.5 hours outside and burned 6 tanks!! Maybe next time it'll get up in the air for me!

Thanks for all the help everyone!!

Hmmm.. Upon further inspection today I noticed that I not only bent my boom supports, I also put an almost un-noticeable bend in the boom itself, but it is bent too... very slightly down and to one direction where it exits the main frame... guess I better order some parts

Is it going to make any difference if I fly with this slightly bent tail boom? Like I said, I almost didn't even notice it was bent (other people couldn't tell either, but it didn't look right to me so I took it apart and I can see it clearly now)

I know exactly when it happened yesterday too... it got up about 5 or so feet because of a gust of wind and I brought it down too hard. I noticed the bent supports right away.. Was that a boom strike? or what is the term for that?

Sounds like one...

I would probably invest in a crash kit. Sounds like a minor boom strike. The spindle and main shaft are probably ok, but doesn't hurt to have another set waiting for the big one if you don't need them this time.
Also CAREFULLY inspect your main blades. If they hit the tail boom at all then you could have a flawed main blade. Bad juju if that thing decides to come apart during a flight. Especially when you are just hovering at or below eye level.

What should I be looking for on my main blades? Any tell tale signs?

I cant seem to see any damage to the blades... I dont think the blades hit the boom, I think I bent it because it dropped like a rock from above 5 feet and hit the ground hard.. what do you think?

You Forgot Something

I skimmed through all of the above posts and did not see anyone mention Revo Mix. If you are in heading hold mode, you will want your Revo Mix OFF (Inhibit).

If you do not inhibit the revo mix, your radio will be fighting the heading hold all the time.

If someone mentioned this above, sorry for the repeat.
