The temp gun is not needed but I have one because I like extra toys and gadgets.

You can tell how its running by the smoke and sound. The engine temp should never get above 230F or you are starting to get too lean.

Never used one, so I can't tell you how good they are. However I'd say you definetely don't NEED one.
As a matter of fact, I have never seen one at the field. Pilots have been and still are tunning their glow engines without a gun.

You can get a sense of how your engine runs with the smoke, the noise, you can also hover the heli for a minute or two, land it and touch the crankcase where the shaft exits. You'll get used to you engine quickly, and you'll soon know when it's running too lean.

Try touching the bottom of the engine, up inside the back cover. When my OS50 is set a little rich (all the time) I can keep my finger on it forever, and when I'm running my OS32 right in tune I can keep my finger on the backplate about 4 seconds. You may have to calibrate your temperature sensing metacarpal accordingly. Get your engine running reliably, and with good power and smoke, and touch the case to begin the calibration... Too lean and your finger will got hot in a hurry. If you have a really manly hand, touch the head, but I wouldn't reccomend it. MUCH hotter.

I agree with JCadwell,

I usually use the front bearing area of the crankcase, up by the fan. If that's cool after a few minutes flying you are not too lean.

I don't think you need to own a temp gun, but I do think they are nice to use to calibrate your senses. You should tune by feel at various rpms, but then sometimes use a temp gun to double check that you are in a reasonable range -- like 190 to 225 degrees. When my engine is running well, I have checked its temp, and generally it is about 210. Water boils at 212, so a spit test can work. I am calibrating my mind to know what to look for by spitting whenever I take a temp reading. That way, I can later not use a temp gun and know what the spit should do. It seems to slowly simmer away.

In any case, I am just as happy to use a $30 probe as I am a $85 Raytek.
