Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Is this possible in an OS 61 SX?

I have an older OS 61 SX Heli engine that's been in storage for a while and I decided to dust it off and put it back in the air. It turns over smoothly and has good compression, but then it gets weird.

If I tilt the engine around in my hand it sounds as if there are ball bearings rolling around indside of it. If you've ever had a BB gun and bought BB's in those little carboard tubes, you know the sound. Now, obviously there isn't room inside the engine for loose bearings to roll around and if they were, I would think it'd be tough to turn the engine cuz they'd get jammed in something. I took the back plate off and it looks good inside.

Could it be possible that the balls in the rear bearing somehow came loose from the retainer and are rolling inside of the race? This would explain the sound and why the engine is still smooth.

Of course I could just pop the crankshaft out and have a look, but I can't get the prop nut off. It must have a gallon of locktite on it. I guess I'll have to get it off eventually to replace the bearing. Any ideas how to get it off? The engine is out of an old X-Cell Custom and has a two-piece aluminum fan.

Try heating the prop nut with a heat gun or butane micro torch, that should help release any locktite on the threads. Don't know about the bearing thing, though. It's probably best to take the motor apart and make sure everything is OK. It would be a perfect opportunity to clean the motor out inside too. I just sold a K&B Screamin' .48 plank engine that had been stored with afterrun in it for over two years. It was pretty gummed up (but no rust thank God) after sitting for so long, but it cleaned right up with a little alcohol.

Good Luck,

Mike

You will need two tools to get your engine apart. First, some sort of crank lock. By far the best is the white delrin gadget that fits over the connecting rod. You remove the backplate, and it slips right in.

Once the nut is loosened and removed, then you might need an MA fan hub puller or something similar. It's the only way to get a stuck fan hub off without trashing the front bearing. If the collets were well-greased when the fan hub was installed, it may well slip right off; keep your fingers crossed...

BTW, if you have an older SX as opposed to a newer SX-WC, treasure it. The non-WC version is a much smoother engine. The WC was created to satisfy the cravings of the power freaks- it has different porting and different carburetion, and does indeed produce more power. But much of the mid-range hover smoothness was lost as a result.

Follow-Up

Okay, this is weird. The noise is not coming from the engine. I took it apart and it looks brand new inside.

The noise is coming from the fan! I removed the fan hub by taking out three screws. The lower part of the hub has a groove on the inside with a half dozen ball bearings in it. Evidently, it's some kind of dynamic balancing system. So, to make a long story short, the noise I hear is normal. Like I said, weird.
