Hello guys was wondering if you can help me out at all. I have my freya running at 1750 headspeed but when i try to kick up the headspeed a little i get this wag in the tail (similair to a gyro wag but it isnt). I really only see it when i get the headspeed up. Im running a ys 61 st2 with the delrin gear thats matched for it. Can it be my engine is running rich and its cause it to do that? It sounds good and doesnt load up much. Any ideas. nothing is out of balance so im stumped

Tail wag is usually related to engine tuning, this also sometimes manifests itself by the horizontal fin buzzing at the tips. Most of the time it requires tuning the mid needle or adjustment of the throttle curve at hover point. A good rule is to richen up the mid needle and gradually lean it slowly so that a good deal of smoke is coming from the muffler without the tail wagging.

Tail shake (up and down) at ANY head speed indicates either a bent tailshaft or tail blade holder.

Tail shake at differing head speeds (shows up in 1750 but not in 1500 rpm) usually means there's an imbalance on the rotor head or drive train. Usually, this accompanies a shaking in the canopy or skids.

Good luck.

No vibration in canopy

I was out with it today and the front end doesnt shake at all (canopy) its just present in the tail and only at certain speeds otherwise its smooth. Im gonna try to mess with my needles tomorrow to see if that makes it go away.

Also, don't forget to check the tension of the belt. You're tailboom might need adjustment.

I had the same issue if I leaned out my engine .SO what I did is I move my tail boom supports to the bottom and then leaned out my engine .If i would left my supports on the top I had to run my engine very rich .

I have my boom supports on the bottom

I already have my supports on the bottom. I just reworked my machine and noticed a few things wrong with it. I put the split collers on the main mast and if i pulled on the head it moved so i tightened that all up and adjusted my tail best so it was tight. You can push it in a bit (1/8-1/4)..it seemed loose before. I think i should be good to go. I think i might try richening the high end to see it that helps cause it seemed to do it more at 1/2 to full throttle

Tail vibrations

I too am noticing this on my Freya.....especially since I put on the carbon fiber vertical fin. That baby really vibrates. I am running a YS 80 and I am pretty sure that the shake/vibration is due to engine tuning. I just put in the 61 ST2 throttle barrel, but have not flown with it yet.

I will get it dialed in and let you know if the new throttle barrel helps. I am currently running my mid range about 1/2 turn leaner than recommend to avoid loading up in hover. High & low ends are on the lean side of the recommended settings.

We will see what happens!!!

Problem solved

It was my engine. I went out today and said i was gonna resovle this myself. Messed with the needles and it settled right down.

Good to hear.

After 200 flights on the Freya, I've come to know every little quirk in it especially how to lock down unwanted shakes.

Getting the hang of setup on 60's

They sure are a little different then the 30's i ran last season. I tried setting my headspeed on my freya like on my raptor (1950 rpm) and i didnt have a clue how fast the head was turning. I think i had the freya spinning above 2000 rpm. I put the tach on it today and got it down to about 1750. Is that what you fellas run to do hard 3d? I sure like the way it flys around 1900 but is it safe running it that high? Seems like the gremlins have lept into my egro z230. When i punch full throttle the head unloads. Im sure the clutch isnt grabbing at full throttle. Im gonna call Horizon and quiz then on it in the morning. Thx for all your help fellas....this forum sure is a good place for info and brainstorming

Headspead

The head on the Freya is rated for 2000 rpm. I like to run around 1800.
