e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Charging Problem????

Hi,
I just got a pack of Sanyo 2400Mah NiCd and first 2 times, they charged without any probs. I used a GWS peak charger and they were charged at 3 Amps( first time) and 1 Amp(2nd time). I just put them to charge again and there seems to be something wrong. When I increase the Amps to say 2A, it will slowly decrease to about .5A after 1 minute and no matter how much I turn the knob, it will not increase. Is it possible that my pack has been damaged as yesterday I had a problem with my ESC which was smoking due to some internal short cicuit. I would really appreciate some guidance on this as I am a battery idiot.

Cheers.

Well they could be damaged but... if I can give you piece of advice never charge your new batteries at the begining with high Amps except pushed packs. It takes some time for each cell in a pack to settle down so they have more or less the same voltage if properly charged. I would recommend for first cycles 1/10 charge/discharge rate so afterwards cells have closer almost equal characteristic. It is not a problem to charge them immediately with high Amps and it works as well but 1/10 charging is like a warm-up for them. It is also very good to charge them 1/10 during flight season lets say after every 30 high Amp cycles. You will get probably longer lifetime and higher capacity over time.

Back to your problem. Smoking, shortened ESC of course may damage your batteries. First of all I would recommend to measure each cell individually if possible to recognize if there is a damaged cell. If this is not possible charge the pack 2 or 3 cycles with 1/10 and then when fully charged measure the battery pack voltage. If it doesn't corespond to the nominal voltage (+/- 5-10%) it is possible that one or more cells were damaged. If it is OK try to charge them with higher Amps and controll if there isn't a cell which has very different temperature than others while this could be also sign than something is wrong.
It is also good to ask somebody with computer charger to help you with that. Modern chargers monitor several values during charging/discharging process so you can immediately see whether your battteries are really worth to play with or not.
Good luck
