Hi I fly with an 8103 and a JR 10X. But I have a freind who flies Futaba, he's always saying that the 9Z, is just the best and the only way to go. So what I want to know is what are you guys flying with and what do you think. I know you should stick with what you like. I see it like this, we all like different things, so there is no right or wrong. Let me know what you guys think, Id love to hear what everybody is using. Thanks Steve

10X vs. 9ZHW

I have been flying JR for 10 years and just made the switch to Futaba. This will be the year that I also get into planes so I wanted a radio that did both. My other reason was to get better funtionality out of my radio. In particular with the GV-1 and my GY501.

Do I like the looks of the 10X better, yes. When it comes down to it, it's about the functionality that made me switch. Keep in mind that the learning curve for the 9Z is much more. Hop this helps.

If you do a search for this topic, you'll find an umpteen-long thread from a little while back. The horse pretty much got beaten to a bloody pulp back then.

Top three ways to form an endless thread :

1. Mention Irwin
2. Debate the 10x vs 9Z
3. Ask if you should order from overseas

I don't get why I cannot fly an airplane with my 10X. I know it does not have airplane modes, but so what? What does one need for an airplane that a 10X cannot do?

I should put lead in my 10X and hand it to a friend with a plastic transmitter and say "See, feel the weight. Nice huh?" But it will be like 5 lbs.

If you are happy with it and it does what you want, keep it and pay no attention to your friend. If you ever find that it won't do something that you want to do, then you can check out the 9Z to see if it meets your new requirements. You gain nothing by selling one $1400 radio and buying another if you are happy with the one you have. They are both excellent radios.

Thanks for the replies guys. And Dr. Ben, I did not see the previous posting, was not trying to start anything, I tried to do a search by typing in 10X vs 9Z and it said it must be three characters to search. So could not find old info. If you could provide the way for me to find it I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks everyone Steve

They must do that 3 character thing to keep the index smaller, but it is a problem for searching model numbers. Maybe Mr. Runryder will have an opinion.

If you have a problem with the limit for three letter words, add an asterisk to the two letters, ie -> 9z* . That should get you what you're looking for.

I too used the 8103 for years and a friend had the 9Z. He was always after me to get the Futaba. I got the 10X and just love the way it feels in my hands. My friend and I always fly each others ships so when he flew my new 10X for the first time he had one of the best flights I had ever seen him make. He will not admit to it but I think he likes the 10X.

9Z or 10X

I was with JR from the Galaxy 8 (shows how old I am :-) through the PCM10 and on to the 10S and 10SX. All my heli's had JR everything in them, from servos to gyros. Many said I even had JR shorts

I got tired of waiting for a JR heading hold and a JR governor, so I bought the Futaba units...I was very impressed. I always wanted some of the advanced software features that the Futaba 9Z had in my JR's, so I waited for the 10X to show. When it did, I was very disappointed as all it really had of significant difference was the electronic trims!
So though I knew it was going to cost me a fair bit to buy new Futaba PCM RX's etc., I decided I will have to stop throwing good money after bad sooner or later, so the sooner the better. So I sold my JR10 and got the Futaba 9Z.

All I can say is once I got used to the 9Z's programing logic I found it not only as easy to program (and much easier to program the more advanced and/or complicated items) but their servos were far more dependable and cost a lot less money. And it seems that JR is still lagging in HH technology, digital servo technology and they still do not have a governor.

Needless to say I now have all Futaba and only regret that I did not convert many many years ago, when the first version of the 9Z was launched.

The JR10X is very good, but I found the 9Z far superior. Looking at the software, I think I would probably prefer the far less expensive 9C to the 10X!!!

The 10X is like having a 466PIII computer on Windows 98. If you are upgrading from an older 166PII with W95 (8103), then you will be very happy with the 10X. But that still means that the 1.6PIV with W/NT (Futaba 9Z) is a lot better, though it does not cost any more. I think because they are in the same price range, many think they are of equal power. So why pay more for less?
