UAV Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles > A Dog in the cockpit?

Interesting article in the new National Geographic

They discuss how Aircraft will be built to carry a pilot and a dog in the cockpit.

The Pilot's job is to feed the dog, and the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he touches anything!!

Watal they think of next?

I read an article a while back about this and they made an interesting point.

They said that we would probably never see a completely pilotless plane because the types of mistakes these planes would make would be totally unacceptable.

While a real pilot can be forgiven for crashing in extraordinary weather, a pilotless plane that experiences a glitch is very likely to crash into the side of a mountain on a perfectly clear day.

And while we would look at the human pilot who crashed and say "well he'll never do that again", we would quickly attribute the same fault of a pilotless plane to every other pilotless plane in the air.

Youd be right Bill

That happened in 1970, theyve been blaming automation ever since for not taking evasive action of its own accord as a real pilot would.

So how do I get on that wave then, all for UAV but I could do with a few signposts showing me where the bus stop is.

Mike makes a good point. Autopilots have become ubiquitous on airplanes and they really are good enough to fly a plane.

I think that when you have an airplane full of people though, there will always be a human pilot onboard "just in case". The value we place on human life, and the consequences of a crash are so high that on some subconscious level we need that human pilot onboard. I don't know about you guys, but when I get on a plane, if the cockpit door is open, I take a good look inside

UAV's are definitely taking off (pun intended) and I personally can't wait to see where this technology takes us.
