Hi all, I tried to start my Raptor 30 today with no luck. It turns out that my fan hub screw wasn't tight enough and the fan turned out and jammed everything, no big deal I think I managed to get it tight enough.

The problem now is, when I was putting it all back together I stripped one of the engine mount holes (not the screw) that goes through the side of the frame (there are 4 of them)... Am I screwed? Do I have to order a new mount?? I decided to use some red loctite and put the screw in as snug as it will go with the red loctite, will this hold once the loctite sets? The other 3 holes and screws are fine.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions..

Hang in there!

The red locktite will only make your problem worse.

I think you know what to do.

However, your raptor isn't life threatening in it's current state. Just use the blue locktite for now and order a new bracket. Keep an eye on things, and you should be ok.

Hey man, why does my lipo get bigger every time I charge it?

The red loctite was bad idea.

If by some miracle it didn't really take due to
oil or grease, remove the screw and either
buy a new engine mount or maybe drill/tap it
for M4 (or install an M3 steel insert).

If the red loctite took, your going to have a
bitch of a time trying to get it out. Enough
heat to make it loosen may well damage
the frame. You may have to use a cutoff
wheel and cut the head of the screw off
and then remove the mount and attempt
to save the mount. Or just order another.

Thanks for the fast replies!! I got the screw out and cleaned what I could off of it and used blue loctite instead. I'll just order a new engine mount, but for now I'll try it as is... It fairly snug, and with the other 3 screws holding it, it shouldn't move.

Thanks!!

wow, i had the same thing happen to me only I stripped the bolt, not the mount. Ive got the other 3 real tight and the 4th is screwed in tightly but not very tight. Its been working fine ever since.

Good luck,

Drill and tap it out to the next size.

Why take a chance.

eazy on the rough stuff!!!

Sounds like anxiety might be getting the best of you. There are lots of guys upgrading their birds to 46/50 class and I'm sure if you look/post around that you can find one of those cheap oem 32 mounts for almost nothing! Are you using L-wrenches or those cheap skinny boundous tools? There is no real replacement for the feel and torque control of a good set of hardened made to fit allen drivers. I would suggest KSJ or Century or Dynamite in sizes 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm. I'm not sure that this is part of your problem, but I have seen it be a contributing factor more than a dozen times. Just a suggestion!

It sure makes an interesting "squeak" sound when you try to start it and the fan jams up on the frame, eh? I had that happen too, don't feel bad, it's easy to do. Teaches you the value of lots of loctite on the fan and main nut though.

yeah, it had me freaked for awhile.. everything jammed up solid!

Later in that day, after I got it all fixed up I finally got it started (in my dining room) I tell you this, nitro burns the eyes!!

What?

Gluing frames together?
Patching up stripped mounts?
Flying with known stripped screws Micky-Moused with Loc-Tite?
You guys are far too scary for me!!

BTW, let me know where and when you guys fly.
I'll be somewhere else!

Geez, as if there are not enough things that can happen, try a new approach..... KEEP THINGS SAFE! If your health and safety is not worth a few $$ you should be in a different hobby.

RaptorHelius, I forgot to mention running an engine in doors, YOU get the prize....keep doing stuff like that, we won't have to worry about you much longer.

Yay! I won the prize!

Relax! I had my windows wide open and the heli sitting by the patio door and ran the motor for around 20 seconds to see if the damn thing even worked before I took it to some field and couldn't get it started there. My workshop happens to be in my dining room, so it made sense to learn how to start it there.

Surprisingly, it wasn't as noisy as I thought it would be.. I'm also using 10% nitro so there wasn't much smoke...

I'm ordering a new engine mount so dont worry about that either. The screw hole wasn't completely stripped either (I stopped before I stripped it completely), so I cleaned the little bit of aluminum off the screw and it still holds tightly with the loctite. (as a matter of fact, I dont think I got all the red loctite out of it, so it probably isn't going to come out at all...) I'll have to deal with that later...

This is a learning experience for me, and that was the first time I've ever started any RC nitro motor so I wanted to make sure the the throttle linkages and everything worked properly and my engine cut-off... Which by the way seems perfect, she idled nice and when I hit the cut-off switch it stopped..

Fix the mount

Why don't you just fix the mount? Helicoil it. I would think that a 4-40 Helicoil kit would only be a few bucks. You could do all for bolt holes and never have to worry about it again and as a added bonus, the 4-40 thread pitch is deeper so you don't have to worry about pulling the threads!

I'M WITH BLADE RUNNER!!!!

MAAAAAAAAAN!!!!! Running a heli on the dining room table indoors would give my wife a freeekin heart attack.

Bladerunner, the other day an elderly gentleman came by my lhs while several heli guys and 1 of my students were there on the simulator and started talking about his son flying his raptor in the house. Everybody became real quiet and dropped their heads for a moment. The question eventually came out, "...are you sure?....maybe it was electric!..." Nope, looks just like this one right here. (points to my students r-30) The guy eventually got the point that all of us were so shocked but did not want to offend him when he said, "....oh but he's pretty good, been flying for 4-5 years....." Crazy man, just plain crazy! Hey, we all love helis but we gain a lot from the comrodery of peer association and I know for a fact that my friends would be the first to stop me from doing something that outrageous and that odd and that out of sync with normal behavior for a responsible heli pilot.

TheDave-most heli pilots carry metric only equipment and thow out any SAE parts that sneak in because our tools don't fit them. The mount is like under $10 and not worth all that labor and the added weight of carring 2 tool sets IMO.

ah, but I didn't fly it inside (didn't have the main blades on either), just idled it and gave it a little bit of throttle for about 20 seconds.. It's not that big a deal, if I had a garage I would have done it there...

What???

RaptorHelius;

"I tell you this, nitro burns the eyes!!"

" I had my windows wide open and the heli sitting by the patio door".

"It's not that big a deal".

You keep telling yourself that, Denial can be very comforting.

I guess your windows areVERY small if your eyes were burning!
Just think what that will do to your lungs.

There used to be a thread making compound, even though the name of the product eludes my feable mind.. but the stuff was not half bad.. I think 'The_Dave' had the best idea.. helicoil it... Works like a charm.
