e-Mikado Logo 400 500 600 > Running Li-Poly in Logo 10

Hi,

I am thinking about trying a Thunder Power 4s4p in my Logo 10 and had a few questions --

1.) Is there anything special that has to be done to reinforce the pack (i.e. carbon plates, rods, etc.)?

2.) Is there anything that needs to be done to protect the battery from being damaged (squashed) by the O-rings?

3.) Is there a "safe" overnight charge rate for Lipo batteries where the batteries could be left unattended without fear of battery damage or fire(something equivalent of the C/10 rate for Nicd or Nimh)?

4.) I plan on only gentle overnight charges with a Triton using the thermal probe. What are good number for the Triton and where should the thermal probe be placed?

5.) Not that I ever crash, but if an incident occurs (say, a boom strike) what are the chances the battery will be damaged or destroyed? Can a damaged pack be repaired or can it/does it need to be sent back to Thunder Power?

6.) Any other tips (installation/charging/other) to protect the $300 investment? Any thing else I need to order other than the pack?

Thanks,
Paul

1. I've installed the Mikado CF Battery Plate. This supports the packs and will prevent the pack from curving should it warm up a little. In addition to the 2 O rings, I have a velcro strap in front that keeps the battery pack on the support plate.

2. No problems with the O rings as long as you don't make them too tight.

3. I charge my TP8000 packs at 5.5A, max amps with my Schulze 330D. Takes around 1.5 - 2 hours. NEVER charge Lipo packs unattended since the consequences are very very bad. I may buy an Astro 109 so I can increase my charge rates to 8A.

4. Lipo packs can be charged at 1C, so there is no reason to try overnight charging since there is no improvement in power and it isn't any safer either.

5. Lipo packs should not suffer any damage unless there is a direct hit on it, so, boom strikes should have no impact. Disconnect the pack and leave it someplace fire safe for 1 hour if you should crash. This ensures that the pack hasn't shorted and won't burst into flames spontaneously. I would send the pack back to Thunder Power for repair/evaluation should anything happen. Doing repairs yourself is not advisable since the consequences could be pretty dire..

6. Remember to order some Deans Ultra connectors since the packs come without connectors.

I wonder how shipping services, especially air shipping services, deal with mailing Lipo's (especially damaged ones)? I just had a horrible vision of of a suspect Lipo being sent back to a manufacturer only to short out and catch fire in cargo hold of an airplane. Scary stuff...

www.flightpower.co.uk (or see our RR ad) supplies the FlightPower Pro 4s4p 8000 LiPoly packs which have the same charge/discharge spec as the TP8000 LiPo - the difference being they are ready to go in stock form with their own internal chasis to prevent bending and deformation and help protect them from harsh physical environments (like a normal day flying through the air in an RC model). This is what we meant by "designed specifically for RC flight"!

Be safe and enjoy!

Julian,
How did you keep your external dimensions and weights exactly the same as the TP packs while adding your "internal chassis"?

John,

A picky point but a fair one. Both sets of data refer to cell dimensions - the TP figures don't take account of lumps and bumps, ours are simply not updated from OEM spec to production spec while we fight to get our new website sorted, the chasis only adds a couple of mm to the cells on the vertical, the sides are still flexible to comply with safety. This should illustrate the point:

I see. I'll measure my TP pack tonight and compare it to the given specs. Your picture shows your packs as about 11% wider than the TP pack. That certainly wouldn't make it any easier to fit it in the Logo frames which already have to be spread a bit for the TP packs.

I'll check your site occasionally for updated dimensions.

Thanks,
John

Update, we've have no problems with the current range of LiPoly packs for Logo 16, Logo 20, Logo 24, Joker CX, Maxi Joker, Eolo but it looks like we've missed a trick with the Logo 10. Our batteries have a heritage in professional flying camera equipment with sister company www.autographyaerials.co.uk (using Logo 20 & Maxi Joker) which is where the rugedised packs come from BUT it looks like we need a slimmer style of pack for the Logo 10. The easy answer is to offer a simplified 4s4p pack without chasis just to get it to fit. However we believe the advantages in having a pack that can take a few knocks does not just apply to pros but to hobby and sports use too - arguably more so. We'll investigate immediately to see if we can come up with an answer that satisfies both criteria. Will post here and on the site

Update.

We've now sorted out the FlightPower Pro pack dimensions on the site (i.e. the packs with the internal chasis).

We've also added a new item:

FlightPower Pro 8000 4s4p [Slim] which is a little taller at 28mm to keep all the innards neatly internal (which is something we're passionate about) but as slim as we can get it for the Logo 10 at 49mm.

Thanks for the feedback on this one, it's been a great help,

Cheers,

Julian

And for those recently interested in LiPo power for their Logo 10s, Thunder Power will be offering new 8-12C 4000-8000 mAh packs very soon! These packs will be even narrower than 49mm - the perfect fit for in between Logo 10 frames!

Specs on the new packs (dimensions, price, performance) will be available very soon!

Great info, I'm getting ready to call about some 8s2p's. I may wait a bit for the new cells to surface.
