Hello,
I'm looking for advice from those who have turned down a motor shaft in order to fit smaller pinions. I know some guys have done this in order to try hi-voltage LiPo setups.

I really want to try an AstroFlight 010 8-turn motor in my new Hornet II heli. Unfortunately, AstroFlight only makes that motor with an 1/8" shaft which is way too big to fit a small enough pinion in order to work. I asked AF very nicely about the possibility of getting one with a 2-mm shaft, but they simply responded that they recommend the 10-turn version and that they do not make the 8-turn motor with a 2-mm shaft.

Well, by the numbers and real world tests, their "recommended" 10-turn motor is ho-hum performance wise. By the numbers, the 8-turn version would be much better and would equal or outperform the current "kings of the hill" the Razor Micro Heli V2 and the Hacker B20-22S.

Anyways, back to the question ... Any tips for such an operation?

Thank you,
John

It might be possible to drill the hole in the pinon gear bigger to fit the 2mm shaft? Just take the pinion to a machine shop and ask them to do it for you. I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much and it would be easier to make the pinion hole bigger then it would be to make the shaft diameter smaller?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Patrick,
The problem is that it is physically not possible to put a 12-tooth 64P gear on an 1/8" shaft. Same reason why a 13-tooth is the smallest pinion which will fit on a 5-mm shaft for the Logo 10. I really need to get the shaft down to 2-mm in order for it to work.

Thanks,
John

OIC, well looks like your going to have to take the shaft to a machining shop and have them mill it down some? If that is possible fo them to do? Oh well, good luck with your project there. Hope you figure it out?

I turned down the shaft on one of my mega motors so I could use it in a speed 400 gearbox. How I did it, I hooked up an esc and had receiver sitting on the bench clamped the motor down in a vise (wraped a piece of rubber around the motor so it wouldnt get mared) spun the motor up to it's lowest speed with my tx and ground it down with a dremel and a fiber cutting disk checking my progress often with a caliper also to let the shaft cool down so I didnt get it to hot during the process. if you take your time ceck your progress and keep the shaft cool you should be able to get it turned down.

I might just have to eat my words about not being able to drill 1/8" into a 12-tooth 64P gear. I just did some photogrammetry on a picture of a 13-tooth pinion and it looks like it could be drilled to 4 mm which is 0.1575". 1/8" is 0.125" so the 12-tooth may just have enough metal drill it out. Unfortunately, I don't have the pinion yet, so I can't check it tonight with calipers.

Buzzsaw,
What did you do to insure that metal shavings/filings/dust did not get into the motor.

Thanks for the responses.

Sorry I forgot about that, I stuck masking tape over the cooling holes and bearings front and back not a problem since it was below freezing in my shop that night BBBRRRR!!! and the motor was running at very low power.
