Main Discussion > Gyros:60 vs 30 size?

I've read gyros are designed w/ a bias for a 30 or 60 size heli, but I don't understand what the difference could be. Why not a 502 in a 30 heli, or a 401 in a 60; opinions (rather, knowledge)?

There are several people I know running a Futaba 401 in a .60 heli, and they work just fine. Nowhere have I read or heard that a 401 is only suitable for smaller machines. Futaba does state that the 240 is for electric or small IC machines, but I think that has more to do with the features of that gyro being geared toward lower-end helis.

Marketing plays more in that equation than technical facts.

Why not fly a GY601 in a 30 ? Because I would not fly a $400 gyro in a $250 heli. There is probably a smarter way to spent these $650.

On the other hand, if you can afford a Vigor CS + YS80, then why being cheap and get a $99 gyro. That wouldn't make sense either.

Now, in the case of the 401, this is a mid range gyro, suitable for any heli and most flying skills IMO. The best pilots might want to get better than that, but most of us should be OK with it. The reason people say it is not recommended for a 60 usually refers to the 9253 tail servo. Futaba sells a combo GY401 + 9253 digital servo. Excellent combo with great performance, but the tail servo doesn't have a lot of torque. It will be OK for a 30, but a 60 flying wild 3D may overload the servo. In that case a more expensive gyro that's bunbled with a more robust servo will be a better choice.

That's IMO why people will tell you the 401 is not suitable for a 60.
Although many pilots are flying 60s with 401 gyro and 9253 servos.

The 401+9253 combo works fine on the 60 size or even a gasser. There is just not that much torque needed to turn those tail blades. Maybe you would need a better servo if the helicopter didn't have thrust bearings. I have put well over 100 gallons on the same 9253. Other than a set of gears every now and then it works fine.
I don't know of many gyros aimed at 30 only and 60 only. Reme is right. People just don't put $400 gyros into $250 helicopters.

OK well if the JR8700G has 49.9 oz in of torque, and it's the bomb. Then what torque rateing does the 9253 have? I was planning on putting the 401 combo in my new Fury 60 Expert. Bad idea? I was told some time ago that the tail servo didn't need to be high torque, only high speed. Not that it should be weak. But speed was the most important factor. Any truth at all to this?

Thanks
