e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > PC PS with no 5v line resistance?

I just made a power supply with an old pc one, and my volt meter is showing that it is at about 11.8 volts. i didnt have any light bulb on hand to give the 5v line resistance, so i decided to go ahead and give it a shot anyway. my charger says that any power supply ranging from 11 to 15 volts will be fine to charge with. so is it needed that i put a load on the 5v line since i have enough power for my charger? i didnt see anyone try this without a 5v load in any of the other posts. thanks.

I found that an ATX PS I modified would work without a load on the 5V rail. Have you put a load on the 12V output and checked the voltage? I think this is becouse it is checking the 3.3V rail. The older AT PS definately needed the load.

If you have access to a 'scope have a look at the 12V output some of these PS's have a high frequency fluctuation between 11.3 and 11.8V. I found this upset my charger.

yup, i checked it while my charger was charging on it. everything is working fine. maybe since i had the power-on wire and a neutral wire hooked up to turn the PS on, i didnt have to put a load on the 5v line? the output is a constant 11.8.

if you load up your 5v wire, you will get higher output,i load up tow of my 5v wire with side light blub from my car and it give me a output of 13.4v hope this help.

that makes sense. though there's no real point for me to do it, since im only charging small hummingbird batteries. 11.8 works fine for me. i left the wires cut and taped just in case tho. thanks for your replys.

power supply

Well I just made my own supply and I dont have any load on the 5v. It works on the nova. Havnt had any problems. Is there something I should look for that could be a potential problem in the near future?

FWIW, I built 3 supplies, 1 ATX, and 2 AT.

They all worked fine without a load on the 5V line, provided I didn't try to pull to much current. Quick or Auto charging 12-18 cells with a SuperNova is where I noticed some problems.

The voltage would sit up around 12, then drop down until I got a low voltage indication and the charging stopped. Setting it to charge at a slow rate seemed to work, but it was easy to stick a load on the 5V.
