e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > laptop powersupply for power source of charger

Has anybody done such a thing? I've seen a switched powersupply at an electronics store but thought wether such a small unit compares to a larger (say homebuilt pc powersupply) powersupply.

This one I saw was 12v 8 amps.

It should Work

But 8 amps is not good for your gell cell.

It is recommended to charge at a lower rate. Charging at a high rate can damage a cell.

The chargers people are converting are to be used with their 12V field chargers at home. Not directly to a battery.

Vic,

I assume you are thinking of using the power supply to feed a battery charger which requires a 12V input?

If so it will work but the output will be limited. If you are charging small packs, say 10 cell nicads at up to 5A it will probably be OK.

Silvashadow,

Yes, I am planning on using this to plug my charger to (it's a supernova by rc-line) and charge my 8 cell batteries.

I made my own power source using an old PC power supply, it works well but it's too big. This way the laptop powersupply only uses a small part of my toolbox that I carry around with me.

thanks for the comments all.

merry xmas all!!!..

i ran 4 VHS camcorder batteries in parallel once, got good time out of them at 6amps+/-, roughly about 6 hours constantly running a power panel and charging my rx pack,, which back then was a 2000 NMH, but in the long run switch to a motorcycle dry cell from a 2000 yamaha R1 streetbike...these batteries are pricey..$90..but are UNBELIEVABLY small and powerfull... its dimensions were 7"w x 5h x 2d...same dimensions as 5 packs of cigs lined up next to each other.. and at 2lbs+/-... not bad...12v 7amps, and can be mounted on its side... enourmous reserve time and super quick recovery from sudden draws like the starter, trickled it dutring the week run everything on the weekend... including occassionally running my laptop battery at the field...hey...might as well use the DVD player for something right?...

have a safe News Year all..

Vic,

I'm using a Toshiba laptop PS/AC adaptor to power my Apache LiPo charger. It's rated at 12V, 1.7A . It's been working geat for me and is a lot better than the Radio Shack 12v AC adaptor I was using. The Apache would beep and complain constantly with the RS, but is nice and quiet with the Toshiba.

As long as your carefull with the current rating and make sure you don't go over it then there shouldn't be a problem with it. PC powersupplies are bulky because they supply numerous different voltages. The laptop only supplies one 12v line so it sounds like a good idea to me. I think I'll look into that myself.

I'm on my Toshiba laptop at the moment and had a look at the power supply, it's output is 15V, 5 A.

Man I don't wanna butcher this powersupply as I obviously need it for the laptop. I might look at ordering the same power supply model since it's pretty compact and delivers 5A. I think my Supernova can accept a 15V input...gotta check later.

Here's the model number just in case anybody else is interested:

Toshiba AC Adaptor, Model: PA3083U-1ACA

If you have a laptop power supply, great, it should work.

If not, the Novak Black box is pretty small and in-expensive.

Working in It definately has it's advantages at times
I have access to a number of Toshiba PSU and will be giving it a look in also as soon as I get back to work. Now that was a very useful thread.

Peter,
If you find one that has a higher amp rating (above 5Amps) please let us know what the model number is.

Thanks

Hello;

You could get a 120-watt AC Adapter from IBM for the ThinkPad G series notebooks.

It's horking huge for notebook power supply, and puts out 7.5 amps at 16 volts. (120 watts)

part number 22P9150

I have found myself a Toshiba Satelite Pro power pack. This particular one is 15 V @ 4A. This is enough to charge my 600mAh Tx/Rx packs at 2c which I did last night with no noticeable increase in temp above what it would noramlly be when used to power a laptop. How ever as I now have a 2400mAh Sub-c pack for the R60 I need the 5A version which is still currently in use. Give me time and I'll get hold of one of them. The 4A is still good enough to charge 2400mAh at 1c though and has.

The Part No. of the current PS on this Tecra is PA3083U-1ACA.
I would think after looking at pricing that it's a bit pricy for the intended use but if you can get hold of one they do do the job.

thanks Pete for the part number. I'm gonna look at the markets and see if anybody is selling an old laptop powersupply 2nd hand.

servicky,
I believe some people use seald lead acid (sla) batteries to charge on the field. Those lipos must have high mah rating so you'll need to get one that will not lose charge after one lipo charging. I've also seen a unit used for jumpstarting a car. This unit is in a portable plastic container with a handle, it contains a 10Ah sla inside, jumper leads for the car batts (which I presume you can use as the power source) and a built-in charger...just plug it to the mains overnight.

I wonder if anybody had ever used a bunch of solar panels to charge up ... would be expensive though.
