e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > PC Power Supply for Charger

Hello All,

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but ...

I am trying to use an old PC power supply to power my super nova charger for charging at home.

I have put a load on the 5v line (2 x 12v light bulbs) at that seems ok (the bulbs light up but are not very bright). The power supply starts up OK, but as soon as I connect my charger to the 12v line the power supply shuts down.

I have measured the 12v line (with the 2 x 12v bulbs connected to the 5v supply) and it reads 12.06v, BUT as soon as I place a "load" on the 12v line the power supply shuts down.

I have tried to measure the amps on the 12v line (the power supply has a label that says it produces 7A @ 12v). When I connect my multimeter to the 12v line to read the amps, again the power supply shuts down.

Does anyone have any ideas ?????

Thanks.

This has been discussed before (see: http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t65889p1/ for example).

I'm doing exactly the same (PC supply & a SuperNova) I used a 12v domestic halogen downlighter to stabilise the 5v - glows dimly & doesn't get hot.

It works a treat.

Can't think why yours doesn't except maybe the your 12v bulbs aren't pulling enough current. A big 12v halogen bulb glowing dimly probably eats more amps?

Sorry if that doesn't help much! - Kevin

Just purchase a proper power supply.. it is the easiest way to go.

I purchased the 1212 model but I would buy the 1223 if I had to do over again.

To me it's worth the extra money and piece of mind that it's a good power supply for all my expensive equipment.

Blackhawk,

I am guessing that your power supply is shutting down becouse it is seeing the low impedance of your charger as a short circuit. I know my bench supply does this occasionally.

You cannot put your multimeter across the terminals to measure the current. This is almost a dead short and the power supply will either shut down or fry. Try putting a 12V, 60w car headlight lamp on the output and measure the current. It should be 5A.

You do not say what wattage the lamps are you have connected to the 5V rail nor wherther they are in series or parallel. You should only need one lamp of around 12V, 12w.

Finally, I built two of these, one from an AT supply and one from an ATX supply. The 12V output on a 'scope was not as smooth as you would imagine, the ATX unit showing a high frequency fluctuation between some 11.2 and 11.8 volts.

Finally as, JB_Turner says, I bought a suitable regulated 13.8V bench supply which I use for my Simprop Intelli-control and Pro-Peak Prodigy chargers.
