Is it safe to charge two gell cell batteries parallel. What if they don't have the same amount of charge left in each. They are both 7 aH batteries.

It depends. Read the label on the side of the battery. Even a 2A trickel charger usually puts out to much voltage. When used in alarm panels these batteries never get more than 13.8vdc pushed into them. They should never be charged at more than 14.5Vdc, max. If your charger puts out more, cut it down. A typical diode (1N400x or 1N540x) put in series with your charge connection will drop the voltage by .5v, 2 in series will drop the voltage by 1v.

As twobeers said if the charger is voltage regulated (easily confirmed with a voltmeter) to somewhere between ~13.8,(slower finish to charge / a hot day) and ~14.8 (faster finish to charge /a cold day) then sweet as you could charge 50 in parrallell.

Provided they are of identical chemistry, different combination lead acid batteries have different ideal charge voltage regimes. }

If the charger is a constant current type as 95 % of automotive chargers are then definitly no and any overcharge will result in gassing and unrecoverable loss of electrolyte (electro go juice).
