Hi

What amp power supplies are you guys susing on the Orbit Pro.

Its rated at 40A, just interested to see what performance your getting out of maybe lower A supplies.

Want to charge 32 cell packs.

My first venture into electrics and I want to get it right. I';m not up to spped with volts, amps, current etc, so far as long as the light on my voltspy is green I'm happy.

These 40A power supplies sure are costly though :-)

you'lll need at LEAST 22A to do
a full 32cell @ 8A charge.

So 30-40 (once you cover charging
losses) amps is about right.

Of course, if you use a lower rate,
the requirements go down

My 30 cell NiCDs peak at 49-51 volts; at 4.5 A the charger (robbe maxamp) draws some 20+ A @ 13,8 V ... you do the maths for 32 cells ... I'd go for 30-40 amps continuous, too (in fact I got a Maas 9400).

minimum A charge.....

The absolute BARE minimum you can use and get away with on the Orbit would be 15A. I use a 23A at the shop on several chargers at once, and I see nothing any different than using 1 charger at a time. This 23A supply is the switching type, too.

Figure, the Orbit needs around 750mA to function. And uses upto 8A on the Pro 6.3. So, there you are looking at 9A. In a perfect world, you can get away with 10A, but since this is the real world, 15A is a bare minimum suggestion. 23A @ 13.8 VDC is more than suffice to charge a 32 cell NiCad on a Pro 6.3 Orbit!!!

Hi,

it's not that easy. If you charge 32 cells with 1.65Vmax at 8 amps you'll need 422W (1.65*32*8). Divide it by 13.8V and you'll see that you need 30.6A... not including losses and the current that the charger needs for itself.
But can the Orbit Pro really charge with 8A up to 50V?

As a frame of reference, I trip out a 30 Amp switching supply near the end of the charge with 24 cells.

Max number of cells an Orbit Pro can charge is 32. So, whatever 32 cells equals, is pretty much how much V it can produce. But I've seen stranger things happen.
