e-Minicopter Joker > Astro 109 and power supplies

Howdy,

Is anyone using the Astro 109 charger yet for lithiums? I saw it at Lightflightrc.com

They make it sound like it is the next best thing. If I'm going to spend $750 a flight pack for lithiums, I sure the hell don't want to ruin them with a cheap charger. But hey, if it does the job at 8 amps, who am I to complain?

Also, what are you using for power supplies for these chargers? They have one they say can meet the needs of this Astro, and they are only charging $23 for it. I have yet to see a power supply that can supply over 13 amps (what the astro needs according to them) for under $100.

I would like to buy a commercially available power supply, not build one from a computer power supply.

Thanks,

Shawn

Problem is the charger only does 9 cells. All the lipolys for the Joker are 10 or 11 cell packs. Look at the Schulze 6-330. It does up to 11 cells at 5.5 amps.

I have tried the shultze 6-330d on my Joker packs (10s4p) usually set it for 3.5 amps but it never gets higher than 2.5 Amps.

Has anyone else found this?

I have seen that the more charge left in the lipo, the less the charge rate will be. On a depleted pack, i can get up to 5 amps, but as the maH increase, and the voltage increases, the charge rate decreases.

How bout the Orbit chargers? Do they charge at the 8 amp rate they say they can?

I guess I overlooked the 9 cell issue. Glad you pointed that out.

Orbit is one way to go. But the one that you are talking about it, I have not seen it in the market. I know that it is available, but the stores that I know they do not have it.
It is the Orbit 6.3 the one that you want. The Orbit 6.2 charge 5Amp and that is the one that everybody is selling. I advise you to wait until you can buy the 6.3
Good luck and if you find it please let me know I want to upgrade my.

Id stay away from Orbits - their track record to date is not the best. Not to mention, getting the charger serviced is a nightmare!

Ive used the Schulze 636 for the past few months. VERY powerful!!! Itll charge the full 10S4P pack @ 6.5 amps. Its max charge rate is 8 amps, but it cant output the full 8 amps once you get past 8S packs. But, it still will put out the most power of any charger on the market from Orbit, Astro, etc.

The 330D is also a great alternative. Max charge rate is only 3.5 amps for the 10S4P pack. So far though, the Schulzes have proven to be the most reliable and powerful chargers for large LiPo packs. Thunder Power recomends these chargers before the Orbit and Astro due to their proven consistency

BUT, another alternative would be using 2 of the Astro 109Ds. That way you could charge each 5S4P pack @ 8 amps. Or you could just use 1 charger and charge each 5S4P pack itself. Itll take twice as long, but its the most economical route to take!

That is what I was wondering about last night. People are using the 5S4P's for their jokers aren't they? Two of them in series? This would allow the Astro to be used. I haven't seen a true 10S4P yet. I was already considering buying two charges anyways. It would be nice to buy two chargers and only come to the price of one of the Schulz or Orbits.

Qrrambero,

Esprit Models has the Orbit 6.3 and the new EPROM for the older versions.

So it is possible to use two Astro's to charge the two packs needed for the Joker correct? Man, I sure wish they came with a guarantee that it wouldn't fry the packs.

Thanks,
Shawn
