I'm keen to try and build a tuned pipe for my standard tt39 v1 raptor

Have any folks got any pointers ?

I have been reading alot for several days after doing a google search and before I start cutting out I figgured someone is bound to have already done this before and may know some of the pitfalls.

I currently run 10 % nitro, std engine and exhaust port and operate at sea level or within 500 ft of it.

I figure something around 1700-1800 head speed would work as I would like to capitilise on the pipe's ability to limit max revs, I've found a faster head speed is great but everything feels a little less stressed at the slower speed.

One area I'm unsure of is the ability of the system to recover from a high load situation or spooling up from stationary when the motor isn't "on the pipe"

Here are some of the things I have been reading , nothing that is heli specific as yet

Thanks for your thoughts

Hi Don,

I had pretty good luck with the standard on piece tuned exhaust on the TT 39.

The top one in this pic.

Pretty good power and good recovery.

Here is a picture of whats on the "inside"

I still like to have a governor on everything.

Thanks , it doesn't look that flash inside !!

How do you feel about all the weight hanging on the 2 screws ?

2 Screws

With the heavier exhausts, mainly the Muscle pipe and the V-Tech, you definitely want an exhaust system support.

The Weston seems to hold up really well!

I have never even heard of someone breaking one without some impact with terr-firma.

Maybe someone else can chime in on any being broken.

Does anyone know what the internal structure of the MP 2 looks like?
I would have thought that a tuned pipe would have the capacity to be tuned to an individual motor but this doesnt appear to be the case.

I have used tuned pipes on heli's.For the best results I have set the pipe up on the engine in a fixed wing machine, or test stand using
a propellor. If you intend to run your engine, when in the heli, at 17000
rpm then tune the length for maximum power at 16000 rpm. That way
you will still get a good boost at 17000, but if you load up the rotor
disc then the rpm drops further into the power band and really comes
onto the pipe holding up the head speed. If you unload the rotor disc,
the headspeed and engine speed will increase, the engine will lose
power as it leaves the power band thus limiting the headspeed.Setting
the pipe up in this manner, it acts as a govenor while still boosting
power. You can of course tune the length of the pipe while in the heli,
but using the above method, you know where you are before flying
your heli.
