I have heard that homeland security has outlawed amatures using any type of UAV guidence - like autominos GPS navigation - other than a simple gyro.

I heard anyone flying self guided UAVs must now have a pilots license and file a flight plan for every flight.

Can anyone confirm/denie??

UAV's are not for amature use.
They are not for club fliers

By amature, I mean using one for other than a full time business. As a transportation engineer and land developer in Alaska I pay for aerial photography of remote areas. I want to use a GPS guided UAVs to save me the cost of hiring a full size aircraft. I will use it for professional purposes, but not directly as a source of income. It will not be a toy but a tool.

The photo location is often not visible from the LZ. This is where artifical guidance comes in. I have not done any of this yet, but I have heard rumors that homeland security will have issuse with my desires, although Alaska is immune to some of the homeland security aviation policies...

Most of our towns have no roads to them and many people still live off of the land. I know that is hard for some pepole to grasp, like say in New York City, that is why misinformed groups try to influence our game managment and hunting practices. Oh dont get me started on that...(sorry). But grocery stores are a thousand miles away for some families, if you outlaw trapping, for animal rights, you starve humans. (sorry again, wrong forum).

Waiver

Mike,

I would love to see a copy of the waiver.

My first UAV endeavors will likely be fixed wing. A large "trainer" style RC with a U-NAV or similar guidance system. I would love any input you are willing to offer.

One use you didn't mention could be tracking and counting of game animals, like caribou heards. This is done by full scale aircraft currently in Alaska. A recent example is the delayed season opening because of the heards proximity to the highway. Fish and game didn't want a "turkey shoot" so the opening was postponed. Hunters had to wait until officails had a plane available and good weather for spotting the heard to see if they had moved far enough away form the highway. A low altitude UAV with infra red would have been the ticket. I herby call dibs on the idea so.... nevermind

Gotcha
To me amatuer means not for any commercial purposes.
For sporting and hobby only.

For regulation purposes it sounds like you would fall in the commercial definition as part of the operation is done for commercial purposes.
At least under Aus UAV regs the UAV would be commercial in certification.

If you only have under a mile transmitter range what really is the use of a guidence system on a uav? I really wanted to experement with a programible system with waypoints. Plot in a course and bingo you got it. Just have to figure out video transmition and image aquisistion.
