Safety - RC Helis are not toys > John Major's helicopter accident

I'm sure most of you heard about John's accident where his heli got into him.

I just talked to John on the phone, He is at home and seems to be in very good spirits. He is able to move the fingers that were severed, albeit with some difficulty.

He joked that he still needs to send his tranny in for some "repairs" and is anxious to get back into it.

We have been very concerned over the past weeks, so I was very happy to hear from him and wanted to post here to let everyone know the update.

Accident

Chris,
Could you please give the full details of what exactly happened and what the total injuries were?
I am happy that John is recovering and wish him the best.

As I understand it:

1) He got two fingers severd and re-attached and he gained some of the movement back.

2) He got hit on the other hand at the wrist level and the blade went in almost all the way to the other end. That hand was also re-attached but it looks like that hand is not going to gain the motility back.

What kind was it? Just a 60 glow? A gasser? What caused the loss of control? PPM/PCM? Sorry for all the questions but I learn from them. After another injury thread, I switched my r30 to PCM and used an engine idle fail safe. My 60 was already set like that.

He's Bergen Helicopter's distributor for the UK.
As far as I uderstand he was trying to sell a new 60 size Bergen to a guy and he let the guy hover it. The guy lost control and he tried to get the radio from him but by the time he was able to get the radio back it was too late and all hell broke lose.
So it was human error not mechanical or radio failure.

I'm assuming those were glass/CF blades? (though I suppose even woodies could do impressive damage...)

I guess that it is like driving a car, you shouldn't grab the wheel when someone else is driving? I keep my heli a little further now.

ouch! that had to hurt like a mother!!!!!!!!! similar thing happened to a relative, only with a car. he was working under the hood of his buddies car, cant remember what it was, I think it was a 66 Nova, he had an aluminum radiator fan, he set his had on the edge of the radiator, and as he was leaning over screwing with the carb, he let his fingers dangle a little bit to far and they got hacked up pretty bad! the aluminum fan wasnt in much better shape his middle and index finger were almost all the way off, held on by a thread of skin! but they were fixed like new!

he was gonna sue, but there was already a warning lable on the radiator just joking!!!!!!
