I have a Futaba 6XHS with a R127DF (FM) receiver operating on 72Mhz. I want to upgrade to the new 9chf/p transmitter and keep my existing receiver. The new 9chf/p operates at 50.72 Mhz as opposed to 72. If matched with a corresponding set of xtals, would I still have a problem with compatability? Thanks.

short answer
yes

you will have to either:
buy a module on 72 mhz for the 9chp to talk to your old rx
or
buy another rx on 50 mhz to match the 9chp module ya have.
by the way
it is ileagle to operate the 50 mhz stuff without a ham lisence.

Oh, nevermind, my fault (duh). Now I get it. On the futaba website, it states the band as 50.72. I guess it means 50Mhz / 72Mhz. I thought it was literally 50.72. Sorry for waisting everyones time - my bad.

What's the frequency Kenneth?

Will not work. Not now. Not tommorow. Never.
You will have to change the entire output module to operate the radio on the 72Mhz bandwidth. Simple enough job for the unskilled to undertake, but it is significantly more expensive than just the crystal alone unfurtunately. If you have purchased it from and individual you have 2 options.
1/ Replace all your recievers or 2/ Replace the output module on your transmitter.
If you purchased it from a hobby store. Talk to them and maybe they will swap the module for you or might have knowledge of some one how may have purchased a 72Mhz radio but has all of their gear on the 50Mhz band spectrum.
The 50Mhz module has different componets to enable optimum transmission in that bandwidth. Same for the 72Mhz bandwidth. Its not a simple matter of changing crystals because the transmit module is not tuned to operate @72Mhz.

Are you sure it's 50.72 and not channel 50 in the 72 mhz band? I checked Futaba's website and the lowest 50mhz they list is 50.80 and go up from there. I'm guessing your radio is 72mhz on channel 50 which with the proper crystals you won't have any trouble. Or, the 9c is being listed as capable of either 50 or 72. Which it is depending on the transmitter module it has installed.

Let me get this right

Ok, I have an 8U with a ch 60 modual, and I as well have a 9C that came with a 14 ch modual. Are you saying that I can't switch the moduals. I would like to know. Because if I can't I might have found the reason I crashed my Fury a week ago

You can use any module from any band in any transmitter that's made for that model. (physically compatible) Two exceptions... 27MHz modules can only be used in AM mode, and synthesized modules (multichannel) can only be used in radios that support the channel selection in their software. (9ch's can't use synth'd modules)

Receivers come in five bands, and you can't mix crystals from one band in a receiver from another band. (it might sort of work, but your range will really stink) The five bands:

27MHz (all channels, by color)
50MHz (all channels, RC00-RC09)
72MHz low band (channels 11-35)
72MHz high band (channels 36-60)
76MHz (all channels, 61-90)

FYI, I'm still looking for 50MHz Futaba modules/receivers, so if you have one and don't want / can't use it, get ahold of me. (licensed, N0ZYC)

Yes, you can change the module.

The transmitter module does everything that the trans needs to do as regards the frequency.
As compared to just a crystal change which may work good or not depending on how far away the new frequency is from the previous one.

Remember, PCM transmitter modules will do PPM and PCM.
PPM modules will only do PPM.

This is based on my memory of researching this a few years ago.

As always, awaiting any correction and further enlightenment.

I was under the impression that any transmitter module that will work in your module will do whatever modulation your transmitter can do, whether its PPM or PCM. PCM is just another way of sending data over the same transmission type, i.e. FM; so PPM is PPM over FM, and PCM is PCM over FM; I've never seen a PPM-only module, maybe on really old transmitters or something... correct me if I'm wrong

Virtual1 : I beg to differ with you on your stated remark about synthisized modules not working in 9ch radio. No channel selection is needed.

The 9Z synth module will not work in the 9C because the channel selection is controlled by the software which only the 9Z has. You can use a Hitec Spectra Module but it is considered illegal and so voids your AMA insurance and may cause the FCC JBTs to break down your front door at 2am.

The transmitter body provides the modulation signal (PCM/PPM) and the module provides the modulation type (AM/FM) and the frequency (channel).

Now I don't know if there are any AM modules being produced anymore, but given how noisy an AM signal is compared to an FM signal, you wouldn't get very reliable PCM over it. Personally though, I don't think I'd trust AM for anything as expensive as a heli.
