Ok, I just bought a Hangar 9 Funtana airplane and a Saito .72 -4 stroke to power it (recommended by the aircraft designer).

I started R/C flying with helicopters. This year I flew a used Slow Poke 40 airplane that was given to me. I had a blast except I never could get the motor (2 stroke MDS 40) tuned right and had countless deadstick landings with it.

I don't know jack about all the airplane motors there are to choose from.

My brother-in-law says I wasted my money on the 4 stroke (costs twice as much it's 2-stroke equivalent). He says a 4 stroke is an "old guy motor"

Anybody got any input on this subject?

I don't want this thread to wind up being like a Raptor vs Sceadu vs Hawk debate so JUST THE FACTS PLEASE!

The best motor Ive ever had for a plank besides my 3w 85cctwin
I fly a Ucan do and do tail touching hovers at 1/3rd throttle.
Oh and 4stroke being an old guys motor,,,,,,I dont think so...I think 2 strokes are cheap ass'es motors! Ever seen a 2 stroke in a 2000$
pattern plane????? I think not they live and breath YS only.
OS 50 154$
ys63 285$
Which one do you think is going to be higher quality and performance.

4-strokes are great engines when you want power. If you want speed, you go for a 2-stk. For the plane you bought the saito 72 will be a good engine for it. that design is a handful though. keep it very low on the control throws and make sure the cg is on the forward side. work you way slowly into more throw and reward cg. if this is your second airplane, you might rethink it. I haven't flown one of these yet but a local guy got one and I've watched him fly it and its a handful if you're not used to its flight capabilities. another local guy flew it and thought it was pretty good. he is big into 3d airplane flying.

on the engine, find a copy of Harry Higley's "All About Engines". His book is required reading for knowing engines. it will tell you how to run it and how to work on it when needed. just watch your valve clearance and go and have some quiet fun.

thanks for the advice guys.

I may have overstated my "newbie-ness" to airplanes. I'm HOPING the Funtana is a little BIT of a handful. I've had the opportunity to fly other's trainers along with my Slowpoke... I was looking for a little more of a challenge.

Four strokes go fast, too.Put that YS 63 in a 40 size plane and it will rip!

the reason your 2 stroke didn't run right is because it was an MDS. MDS engine aren't the best ones out there. A 4stroke is better for your plane if you want to to the hovering and 3d stuff. The throttle response is better and it will spin a larger prop because it has more torque. If you are just gonna fly around and play with it, a 2 stroke will be fine and less expensive also.

ive seen both engines in that plane i had the 2 and the other was the 4 the 2 did not have the power that was needed to fly the plane like it was designed and the 4 was perfect for it i wished i had the 4 stroke but the plane is gone now if you tame the thows down it lands itself if your straight down the runway hope you enjoy it

I have!
F3D is the magic word. With 330 KM/H it are the fastest prop powered planes .

But on our airfield there are really nasty sound emission resrtictions.
74 Db for 2stroke, 78 Db for 4stroke. So there are only 4strokes or electro used. Personally I only fly electro, and still gathering money to buy a heli.

I would put a Saito 91 up front ... It vibrates very little and I'm sure your plane will fly great with it. What ever you do keep away from Saito 100 as it vibrates way too much.

Use HS-77 hitec servos all around except for the throttle where you should use a HS-55. If possible, also get a 6Ch Feather receiver from Hitec and also get a NiMH pack for it (not higher than 1000 maH). All of this will ensure no extra weight is added because of the little extra weight caused by the Saito 91.

Ohh ... what ever you do make sure you balance the plane correctly without adding a single Oz of lead on the tail/canoppy. Move the battery pack and receiver around for balance (even though it might mean cutting a hatch on the rear of the plane).

The H9 Funtana can either fly really nice or really crappy ... it depends on the wing-loading / power-weight ratio you manage to get out from it.

4 stroke aricraft motors are very good i have 2Saito 91's (one in the spit in my gallery) and an OS 91, although the saitos look nice i think the OS is a little better of engine. Just for any 4stroke motor set it with a tach, until you have alot of time around them you won't be able to hear if its running good, also if its like my saito and others i know keep a very close eye on the muffler they unthread a bit and wear the threads out -- i've stopped using them and am running perry pumps on my satios with a slight increase in power and NO noise diffrence (used both the ossilator and crank pressure pumps).

and as for old-person motors i'm 18

I have Saito 180 that has had 1/2 of a gallon run through it on a test stand. I will part company with it for $550C.

I lost my infamous tag line.
