Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has actually had these retracts working?

I have tinkered with this thing for over 8 hours and they still will not lock down in the down position. I think the geometry is totaly wrong, but they claim they have never had anyone complain about this.

The bellcranks the give you are to short and the location holes they pre drill for you are not in the right spot.

Can anyone shed some light onto this for me?

Thanks

Bill

Bill,

Check out Mike Prewitt's site. It looks like he's got these things figured out. http://www.raptortechnique.com/funkey_airwolf.htm

Your doing something wrong with them, they are your run of the mill standard mechanical units. I have a pal with the Century Bell222 and his retracts work fine. Sometimes its easier to use a seperate servo for the nose gear. I used to do that in my planks as yes getting both the mains and the nose in sinc is a small chore sometimes. Keep peckin on it youll eventually get em.

Hi Guys,

First off I am not new to helis and have been flying them for 3 years or more. Also I have been flying RC since 74 so I know how to install retracts. I followed the directions and pictures to the ""T"".

I do belive it was were they drilled the holes for the bellcranks and the length of the bellcranks that is the problem. They installed all the wood and its there hardware and I am using the servos they recomended Hitech 525MG's so there should not be any problems.

What is happening is the servo makes its movements, but when bellcrank comes around it has to start to move past the point and needs to start returning in the wrong direction. The servo can not make this movment. The front gear alone can not lock even by rotating servo horn alone.

Tim,

I thought about geting a Vario,,, But then I personaly think they are WAY over priced.

I will try to post a couple of video's of the problem and see what you guys think.

BTW - I called heli-world they place I bought it from and they said return the retracts. I told the gentelman that it was not the retracts that are the problem and It will take me a 1.5 weeks to get the same results.

Oh well thanks guy's

Hello guys;

Well I made a page to show you the setup I am using. This is the stock steup according to the instructions. The only thing that is not syock is the length of the servo contol horns. I went with larger ones inhope to get more throw. In a photo of the bottom, you will see that the rod from the retractsate missaligned when they are moved in and out at there end of travel movement. Also there is a movie of the front gear showing the full travel before wanting to pull the ball of the horn. the servo has to continue around BACK tword the bellcrank to make the gear lock.

Take a peek and tell me if there is something you can see wrong that I have done.

Retracts....

The system does work the way Century says/shows it should.I have the Bell 222 and it works fine. From the picture you took it looks to be that everything is set-up correct. At the moment by Bell is not here it's been hanging up at my shop all winter.

I will say this, it did take a lot of work (trial and error) to get it workin properly.Heck even after i had it set-up i was afraid to use it for fear they would not lock.Keep workin at it , it's worth the extra effort.Feel free to email me with any questions.

When I installed the retracts for my Bell 222 I found it much easier (and reassuring) to use retract servos. The mechanisms lock fully in both up and down positions. I have a few pics. Send me an e-mail if you'd like to see them.

Ditto! You MUST use retract servos for retracts, they have more throw than standard servos. Thats probably the #1 reason more people have probs W retracts than anything else is the servo used.

David,

Sent you an e-mail

Heliman 41,

I w3as going to do that and the ones I was going to use were 102 oz of tourque, but like a dummy I called heli world and asked them what servos to use and they pointed the 525 mg's to me.

servo suggestion

I too have the Century Bell 222 kit which I plan on building next fall (how's that for planning a winter project ahead!). Anyway, My LHS had Expert brand retract servos for $24 each. Horizon Hobby sells them too so you can check them out there. I did alot of research on whether or not to use regular servos and heliman41 and David B are right on as to the necessity of using true retracts in order to get the necessary throw.
Everyone on this site is very helpful to each other. I think Mark should sponser a national convention for everyone to get to meet each other!

I have a big vario carbon airwolf, the retract servos that i tried, have WAY TO MUCH HROW, AND YOU CANT ADJUST THE END POINTS!!!!! belive me, i would rather use retract servos for thier slow speed, any suggestions? I am also buying a painted funbkey 222, I was going to use regular servos on that too. please help!!!!

Hi Greg,

I also went and bought some retract servos last night. And guess what, even with my JR 8103,,,,, I cant control the throws either. Well it looks like I am off to play the geometry on the servo horn game!

Retracts?

I'm not sure if this will help or not. Look in my gallery and click on "Display all". Scroll down to the pics of the retracts in my Bell 222, it has pods similar to the Airwolf and I'm using one retract servo.

The geometry is a bit wierd but the way one of the control rods wraps around the servo is the secret to a smooth operating system. All three wheels operate together at a nice speed.

Hi BladeRunner,

I was looking at your pictures and your retracts are different than the ones they sell now. Were did you get your from and how long ago?

Retracts?

I bought this heli "as is" from my heli mentor, he dosen't do helis anymore But he set it up and painted the heli the way you see it. It originally had a Concept 30 SR in it, he sold the mechanics and I got the fuse.
So I'm sorry that's all I can give you on it. The only thing he said to me was "DON'T touch the linkage--took me forever to get it just right".

Hehehe....I followed his advice and haven't touched it and it works real nice. As I said I think it's those curves in the links that wrap around the servo wheel that make everything so slick, I could imagine that without the curves the travel would be restricted.
