I am currently enrolled in Rutgers School of Engineering, a sophmore, taking some junior classes, and working on Research making the worlds largest sample of nano-chrystaline Titanium Oxide. It sounds like a bigger deal than it is. Anyways I was just wondering how many other people on this board are in a similiar situation as me, college, engineering school, doing research, trying to do things that will make companies think they should pay you a lot of money, ...ect. Tell me about it.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot

Spazz,
Aeronautical engineering is mainly for the project management of Aerospace design, Usually aerospace engineers will head development vs. actual design. At least thats the way it was explained to me by UCFs aeronautical engineering department.

Well, I'm not an engineering major, but I am involved in research that will hopefully be useful at some point. I'm helping a professor with some research, not directly involved as I'm only a first year, but I'm playing catch up so I can serve a better purpose . The research is about Laser induced submicron periodic structures on polymer surfaces.

Z11355 is correct,

There is no alot of money in engineering. Engineering is the blue collar job of the white collar work force. I'm a mechanical engineer. I am the R&D manager for a medical device company and I with my team design really cool spinal implants. I am paid extremely well and have great benifits. However, you should know that engineers are paid the least respect and gratitude by buisnesses. If your ultimate goal is the enjoyment of designing cool stuff, then engineering is great. However, if money and respect is your true desire, then change majors.

you know, it really is sad how many undergrads come out without ever really building something with their hands. Heck, I started R/C planes when I was 13, and then about 2 years ago got into helicopters. I have learned more from these things and goofing off with Ed, the machinist at Gonzaga about designing something that can actually be built than from anything in the actual classes I took.... but alas, not everyone has this type of opertunity, nor do they often times want to take it when it comes along. (which is why I convinced the Gonzaga ASME chapter to compete in the SAE Aero-Design West competition... well, that and to get more people into R/C, but mostly so these people who've never built anything in their life can get dirty and actually make something)

oh, and as a side note, manual machining is fun and challenging a good combination. none of that set up and watch CNC stuff... though I have used that too.

There is no "alot of money" in engineering, There are enginners who design products for others to take the credit and make money out of it
and there are the others that design products and make plenty of money out of it, so it is up to you to choose which one you want to be.

Engineering .... sounds like the passport to the rich and famous right ? .. I was hoping it wouldn't be me who'd post this but take my word on it ... its nothing but mathematical certainty

Dilbert's "Theory of Salary" states: "Engineers and scientists can
never earn as much as executives and salesmen."

This theory can be proven mathematically from the following two
postulates:

1) Knowledge is power
2) Time is money

We know the axiom that: Power = Work / Time

since Knowledge = Power, we have Knowledge = Work / Time

and since Time = Money we have Knowledge = Work / Money

Now solving this equation for Money, we have

Money = Work / Knowledge

thus, as "Knowledge" approaches zero, Money tends to reach infinity,
independent of the amount of Work performed.

THEREFORE: The less one knows, the more one earns.

BTW, If you don't understand the proof of this theory don't worry, you're
likely on your way of earning a great salary! .. unfortunatley, I understand it perfectly

Well then where is the money

Well if engineers are lowely and dont get respect, what could you do in preparation for a career related to engineering to get the money and respect. I am a very hands on person, I have been tinkering with everything and anything since I was little. I have always thought up designs and built little projects. What if you are a talented engineer, is it possible that you can further your career to make the big dollars. I am involved with many things so that I can be as appealing as possible to a company. I plan to get my MBA after working for a few years.

A friend of mine who is from Germay says that the engineers over there are treated much better than us here in the US. According to him, Engineers are treated with the same status as Doctors!

I think that the problem here is that too many people have called themselves engineers when they are not and this denegrates all of us. Air Conditioning companies called themselves Engineering Companies. Management will hire people who do not have engineering degrees but they are now an "engineer". Engineers denegrate themenslve by not considering some engineering degrees as good as others and form a class system. There is even a good chance that the department manager isn't a degreed engineer. Yet, he does your annual performance appraisal.

Degreed engineers are trained to approach and solve problems in specific ways. The "pseudo" engineers are not and it is quite obvious if you see how the approach a problem.

We got fed up with this at work so a group of us started "the degree club". We all framed and hung our degrees like doctors do. It rubs some the wrong way but it does make our point. We worked hard for those degrees and therefore proudly display them.
