Aerial Photography and Video > Upgrades for airfoil system

This is one of the main reasons why I went with the airfoil's system
when I am out shooting and making money John is always working
to make his system better. This is the kind of support I like.
I just got some upgrades on my system that are awesome,

# 1 Clutch system on the tilt
Once in a while I would strip some teeth on the gear's in my tilt servo
from a hard landing or just mounting my camera. Not anymore, the
clutch allows you to move the tilt and not strip the gear's.

# 2 360 degree tilt
Because of the new clutch I can now make my camera
point straight up or straight back.

# 3 gyros stabilized pan
This is amazing it makes a amateur cameraman look great.
When you have an object that you are trying to stay on
all your cameraman has to do is point the camera at the object,
flip a switch and you are locked on. I can turn the helicopter 360°
and the camera stays on that object he can make adjustments
anytime he wants. This set up even makes the pilot look good.

It's funny when I think it's about as good as it can get
he just makes it better. He is like the energizer bunny
he keeps going and going and going

John thanks for your hard work and support
you said you are working on a role mechanism sign me up when it's done

Have fun be safe

This is a question for John (but if you know Tim, feel free to chime in). The #1 and #2 upgrades that are mentioned above, are they now in present versions of the M1 Carbon 30 and/or Professional M1 mount?

Is #3 upgrade standard with the gyroscopic stabilizer, or is that from a different package?

Best Regards,
-Dave

This sounds like an interesting development. Does this mean that the whole camera tray is now hanging off the mechanical gyro, and it is free to turn under the heli - or does the pan axis now have it's own gyro?.

Pan axis has an electric Gyro, I believe.

Great work guys.

Sign me up for a the roll axis option as well.

Flyboy is right it is a gyro on the pan it might be old news I don't know but its new to me and it works awesome. I am starting to think about finding a pilot so I can be the cameraman now and then.

With the gyro on the pan, we can fly to the end of the field turn around and head back toward ourself, when looking at the video you never see any movement in the image, the only sign of movement is when the landing gear goes whizzing past.

In an experiment we performed when setting our camera ship up, we would fly in a straight line and input 30% yaw left and right, when looking at the image it was rock solid and showed no sign of this movement. We have been using the feature sucsessfully for about nine months. Nice to have, we use a 401 with remote gain and over ride so that we can turn it on and off.

Helpful when you want the camera pointing at one spot, you need to be able to turn it on and off so the above does not happen if the pilot comands a movement that the camera person is not expecting.

It is a nice feature to have.

Flyboy,

The results you describe sound amazing. I have seen several attempts to stabilise a pan-axis using continuos-rotation servos and a rate-gyro input. They all work 'sort of' but suffer rotation lag and a lot of drift.

Do you have a video of your turn-around at the field end?. I would love to see it.

Yea, but I am out of town again for the next several weeks. I can post some vids when I return.

Do not put the gyro on the camera platform(camera mount) install it on the back of the carrier. Use the remote gain adjustment to sync the amount of servo pan with the feedback of the gyro.

Drop me a PM or email if I can clear this up at all.

Flyboy,
are you using closed-loop (standard) or open-loop (modified for continues rotation) servos? You are probably using closed loop for you setup to work. On the other hand if you have open-loop servos you would need the gyro on the mount instead.

I use modified closed-loop. The servo is modified for continues rotation with a 5:1 fear ratio and the potentiometer on the pan shaft. This works great with a HH gyro on the heli but because of the gear ratio it responds a bit slow. Not a serous problem as I shoot photos at the moment but I plan to lower the gear ratio to 2:1 for speed.
