i see on rcu there is a post for a ring that goes on your tx and prohibits the stick from going to full throw. looks like a big plastic washer that stick to the gimbal face. is this needed? they say it removes the chance of binding in the rotor head during harsh 3d throws. is this not what flight modes do when properly set up in the tx....
neewbie to helis, but very old to rc

Yes, but the ideal setup is to use the whole mechanical tilt possible in the swashplate without having binding. You should have the maximum response you want at the maximum tilt. That way you have the best resolution possible. The only way this could be accomplished is to use a cyclic ring. That way you can max the throw along the circurference of the swashplate and not in the stick corners only. Without the ring, you won't reach the maximum tilt in the roll and pitch axis without causing binding.

Who the inventer??

Howdy!!
As I recall, Curtis invented this little contraption and used it for quite a while, he may still be using it... I use one and think it's about one of the nicest things I ever did for my flying... The gimbal on the transmitter is square.. The swashplate is round.. If you set up the swash for maximum cyclic, fore aft, right left, then it WILL bind in the corners... The ring fixes this and allows you to maximize control.. Now the swash and gimbal are the same shape... I have no idea why someone would not want to use this simple and very helpful gadget..

The ring GIVES you MORE travel where you want it because you don't have to compromise your forward/back/left/right end points to allow for no binding when your stick is in a corner.

The only reason you WOULDN'T need one (and benefit from one) is if you set your heli for full deflection in the forward/back/left/right zone and STAY OUT OF THE CORNERS on your transmitter.

I ain't that good!

Swashplate is round. Cyclic stick should be round too. The radio should do this for you but it doesn't. A corner is unnatural because full motion is reached prior to getting the stick in the corner.

I thought I was losing something but I gained quite a bit of cyclic control when I got the ring and opened up my end points.

The advantage is the ring allows full throw in pitch and roll without binding in the corners. If one sets up his throws so it does not bind in the corners (as I used to), then you only have .707 (1/sqrt(2)) throw in pitch and roll. If you set it up for full throw in pitch and roll then you have 1.414 (SQRT(2)) times full throw in the corners and the servos will bind.

Pete is right, rarely are you in the corners, but every time you bind the servos you are coming that much closer to killing the battery pack or servos, so it is good to have the ring and not bind no matter what.
