New & Emerging R/C Helicopters > Cypher 50 EX Kit Review

Had my first few flights today, and this bird looks very promising..

It is without doubt the most stable heli in the hover I have ever flown...

It will hover hands off sticks no problem at all for some considerable period... 10 seconds plus...

The cyclic controls are fairly responsive but I get the feeling it wont be setting any world records for roll rate...

Had an initial hiccup that the gov magnet flew out, but upon checking the remaining epoxy it was rubbery, so I reinstalled it with some JB Kwik Weld... It has remain put every since...

Still have some more fiddling to do with the tail, getting it trimmed right but it holds a nice lock anyway, so its only minor tweaking...

The engine was nice and rich for the first few tanks but later I started to lean it a bit and the high gear ratio (9.78:1 ala JR Voyager 50) proved to be fairly un-boggable using a stock muffler.. I intend to try one of those ear bleeding MP2's tomorrow if I get the chance so that might make it even better...

I can certainly say this heli would be great for a beginner if the instructions were better... Whether it has the balls for good 3d we will find out tomorrow

Heres a pic of a raptor converted with the cypher frame kit...

Makes the raptor a lot stiffer

Interesting

Saw this machine on saturday, liked it that much I just ordered it.

I come to the conclusion why should I practice on my raptor with all its upgrades when I can buy one of these for less than the price I paid for my Quk head.

Galifrey ,, Let me know how those new blade grips go.

I changed the blade grips again...

Didnt like the ones I tried so went to Raptor V2 grips etc...

Used the existing bearings, QUK V1 feathering spindle and thrust bearings and v2 grips...

All fitted perfectly and still got +-10 degrees..

sweet

It rained cats and dogs all weekend, so i doubt you go much chance to test it, will we have to wait for next weekend for further testing?

Hey Galifrey, what you mean AGAIN?? Wich ones you try first?
Also why you dont like the factory ones?

Have you has the oportunity to fly it with the factory head configuration?
What I mean, what is capable this heli out of the box without adding upgrades?

How much you spend on: V2 grips, QUK V1 feathering spindle and thrust bearings???

THX,

Isaac

it has been flown okay with the stock grips, I just wanted some thrust bearings in the head for safety before I ask someone else to fly it hard..

The other grips I tried were QWW raptor grips and they restricted the cyclic throw due to their design...

The raptor v2 grips were in my box of bits from my old raptor and I had a v1 feathering spindle and thrust bearings...

Total cost to buy would be about $20

With the stock grips it flew circuits, hovered, etc etc but no aerobatics..

So far are can say the stock heli is excellent for a learner out of the box, but my own fear would not allow me to try it as a 3d machine without some extra reinforcement to the head... I think the thrust bearings alone may have been sufficient, but the raptor v2 grips are more substantial

Is this a real problem doing autorotation???

Is this is like having the main gear driving the tail all the time???

I always hear a lot of people want the tail drive during autos...............

you know, looking at the pictures of this, and realizing how it works, got me wondering if it wouldn't be better (or at least interesting to try) to put the one way bearing/ one way contraption on the engine output shaft somehow as opposed to in the main gear, assuming the losses in that system could be minimized so as to not suck any more power out of the head whilst autoing. that should allow us to simplify and lighten the main gear section of the drivetrain a great deal. (great, just what I need, something else to think about beyond linkage design and experimental stirling regenerators)

But ahh welll, I look forwards to more reports on this heli's progress, hope you don't mind the temporary thread hijack

I guess its really not a big deal, my R60 auto bearing is always locked up and it auto's great. I would be concerned about not having main blade grip thrust bearings on a 50 sized machine.

You are making a good point, yes the tail will be driven all the time, but it does sap a small amount of power by driving the clutch bell as well...

Its like having a slipper clutch unit to drive the tail done up real tight so it doesnt slip...

The alternative at present is to use a JR auto bearing and lose the driven tail..

Again, Waldo and Adrian are spot on... what we also have to remember is how many of new pilots do aerobatic autos, or autos at all for some time...

For small "life saver" autos it will probably suffice if you keep up the headspeed...

I will have it tested this weekend if the weather is better...

The thrust bearings are a must IMHO

Latest Update

Cypher had a few flights today, first flight with it as it comes but with raptor blade grips was quite successful with good handling and a very powerful tail, cyclic control was a bit lifeless compared to say a raptor, but it seemed un-bogable with the OS50 and TT50 muffler running 15% wildcat.

The paddles were then changed to K&S 3d paddles on the front holes and this livened up the cyclic control and made the whole heli much more repsonsive for 3d work, however, the cyclic was getting some unwanted interaction from a stray mix, so the heli was landed and fueled and the mixes removed to get rid of the unwanted interaction (basically on applying full pitch some elevator was being pulled in resulting in the heli pulling a perfect rainbow invert)...

We were running an 1800 headspeed and the heli seemed very stable again and performing piro circuits were a breeze, the flier commented that for this kind of work it would be a breeze to fly all day...

We have yet to give it some hard 3d work to play with, and we ran out of time today, but will report back with any changes we make and its flight performance.

200 bucks but a lot needs upgrading, maybe it will cost as much as a raptor when fully flyable.

it might end up costing the same as a stock raptor, but will be a lot better kitted out...

It already is a better kit for a starter, lighter than a raptor, and more stable to learn with...

The 3d aspect may just require a bit of a learn of this new model, so stay in touch, at present you can buy 2 kits for the price of an r50
