Hi,

what adhevsive is best for gluing a metal pinion to a motor shaft?

I was thinking the zap adhesives would be good but which one!?

Thanks

I've had good success with JB Weld.

It comes in two parts like epoxy but it's for metal. Although I haven't used it for a pinion gear.

Did the grub screw on the pinion strip? Pinion gears don't cost that much ($5- $10). You'll end up spending $5 for JB Weld anyway.

Well, I'm not trying to tell you how to wrench on your machine just giving some thoughts.

well the pinion doesnt have a grub screw it was glued on , but just went loose, have you used the zap glues before?

ZAP

I used ZAP brand CA all the time but never for metal.

What is this for? If you don't mind my asking. Perhaps you could find a replacement pinion that has a grub screw. It really is the better approach. I just bought 48 pitch 21 tooth pinion for .99 cents at a local hobby shop.

When I asked "what's this for?" I meant what model. (i.e. Ikarus Eco-8) but if gluing is your only option then the JB Weld should work. Not sure about Zap.

Good luck,
C.P.

JB Weld or liquid metal will work best..

CA not great for metal to metal..

Bearing retainer might work well also

JBWeld works most excellent. For best results rough up the metal a bit with sandpaper, or a file, or simply scratch it up with a sharp tool. To get a really nice smooth bond heat up a little with a hot hair dryer or heat gun (easy does it) while applying just a little bit more JB with a toothpick. Pick something to practice with before trying the above for the first time unless you are really proficient with your chosen heat source.

I lost my infamous tag line.

JB WELD

Can you get JB WELD in between a shaft and a pinion?

I really just started using the stuff, but I would thing a viscous stuff like Red Locktite would flow in and hold better.

One of the high strength "wicking" locktite products will do the job and if you want to get it apart heating will do it. Remember, you are bonding steel with at least 90K PSI strength with an adhesive with about 6K PSI the key is total surface area of the bond.
