Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Is my new TT36 defective?

My new TT36 has about 2mm play on the main shaft. I can push/pull it in and out. I put 2 tanks through it today, pulled it and noticed fuel around the front bearing. This is a bad thing right?

Bad bearing

You probably have a bad bearing.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it !!!

Check that your fan is on tight - there shouldn't be any play once the fan and clutch are mounted. A little fuel coming out the front is normal - that's how the front bearing gets lubricated.

Mike, I may not have tightened the fan down sufficiently as you noted. But the amount of play in the shaft bothers me. Should it move back and forth so noticeably? I can't remember any of my other engines doing this...

I have a tt36 motor that i will sell you that has about half a gallon of fuel through it. It has a brand new Helimax tuned pipe and header. (costs 43.00 for this pipe and header alone) . I am upgrading to a 50 as I need more power (used to my Fury 60). I will sell you this motor, header and pipe set up for $75 shipped. Please let me know if your interested.

Thanks
Joe

Normally there should be either no end play end the crank or just a barely perceptable give. If there is more, the fan may very well not be fully seated.

A little engine FYI. The amount of fuel that seeps out the front seal of a motor should vary between just a little to none. The front bearing does nothing to hold that fuel back. Depending on the manufacturer, engines either use a small hole drilled forward in the crankcase to the area behind the front bearing or a spiral groove to draw back excess oil that seeps forward for bearing lubrication. The whole process relies on an EXTREMELY precise fit between the OD of the crank in the area behind the front bearing and the ID of the crankcase. The old SX61 non WC was infamous for having a rear bearing fail, thus causing the crankshaft to whip in the crankcase and destroy the delicate fit. If you get the fan fully seated and the end play and oil seepage persist more than just a little bit, you ought to send the motor in. It is a warranty issue.

In the old days of the OS SFN 61's, OS had a BAD run of QC ssues where many brand new motors would spit fuel out the front bearing. It made a total mess of your model. Curtis used to machine a delrin collar with a tube in it to go around the front of his motors and divert the oil away. Saw it myself at the Nats in the early 90's.

i don't know if the front bearing on the other engine hold the oil back in the engine, but mine on my tt36 definately did, was leaking like hell, making my whole frame brace on the raptor coat with a thick layer of oil until I changed it to a new one.

#61 on the 700N list and Proud of it.

Let me clarify my previous post a bit.

If you install a new shield front bearing, especially one with both shields in place, the oil will be blocked for a time until the grease goes away in the bearing. At that point, oil will pass through the shields of the bearing as easily as any liquid will. Shields are not seals. If a bad front bearing is in there and is disrupting the delicate oil seal b/t crank and crankcase, a new bearing will help those circumstances, too, provided the crank to case tolerance isn't already ruined.

There is another option for chronically leaking front ends. Boca sells a sealed ultra seal bearing. These bearings do a fair job of plugging the leak because the construction of the seals prevents the grease from working out.
