Hey,

Do I need a special speed controller for heli's, or can I use one for planes too? I don't know much about speed controllers, I've only got 2 for planes.....

I am using an "airplane" controller in my Logo20. At the time, it was the only controller that could take the current. The heli controllers would not do high voltage AND high current.

So, if you do use a airplane controller there are several problems. One, it doesn't have the governor mode which is REALLY usefull.
So, you would have to use good old throttle curves. It's just like setting up a nitro heli in this case.

The other problems are that most plane controllers don't have a SOFT START. So, when you spool up, it is rather abrupt.

Finally, some airplane controllers have a brake mode that you must shut off. A brake may not hurt, but if it's a strong brake, it could cause damage to the tail with such a quick stop.

Should I take this one:
Hacker-Master 40-3P HELI
Or this one:
Hacker-Master 40-3P HELI OPTO?

I would take neither. You should choose from one of these, Hacker Heli Master 48-3P Opto ESC ($169.95), Schultze Future 18.46k ESC ($189.95) or Schultze Future 12.46e ESC ($199.00). All prices are form fxaeromodels.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

It really depends on the number of cells and local flying conditions. I have flown both the 40-3P opto and the 48-3P opto here in Phoenix on 12 cells. The 48-3P opto gives a better safety margin, and is really necessary if you plan to use Lithium cells. I only really upgraded to the 48-3P for that reason as I never had any thermal problems with the 40-3P. You definitely do not want the controller with BEC as it is more problems than its worth.

If you need the Schulze 18.46K with shipping I got mine from www.icare-rc.com for $173.

The Schulze has one of the smoothest startups around, though I hear the latest Castle controllers are just as smooth, and previous problems have been fixed with the BEC and such.

I think I'll take the hacker-master 40-3P OPTO.

Just another question:
Do you need a separate BEC, because with planes you can just plug the receiver battery in the receiver...
Or do you need to plug it in the gyro too?

The BEC version is good up to 10 cells. I personally have not tried the BEC version and run a seperate receiver pack. When I was researching, I was strongly encouraged to stay away from the BEC versions.

You might look into useing one of the UBEC's from www.koolflightsystems.com takes the place of a rx pack, and allows you to run up to 30 cells and 8-9 servos.
